🛫 Schengen Side (Most Departures)

Airlines: LOT Polish Airlines (Warsaw shuttle hub plus selected European routes), Lufthansa (FRA/MUC), KLM (AMS), Air France (CDG), Swiss (ZRH), Austrian (VIE), ITA Airways (FCO), Brussels Airlines (BRU), plus the dominant Wizz Air and Ryanair LCC operations.

Business Lounge sits airside on the Schengen side between Gates 9 and 10 — a single lounge serving all eligible passengers regardless of carrier.

🌐 Non-Schengen Side (UK + Long-Haul)

Airlines: British Airways (LHR), Turkish Airlines (IST), Aer Lingus (DUB — Ireland is EU but not Schengen), plus seasonal long-haul charters and direct US routes via codeshare. The UK’s post-Brexit non-Schengen status means LHR / MAN / EDI departures all process through the non-Schengen pier.

The Schengen vs non-Schengen split matters most for connecting passengers — allow 60 min to clear out and re-enter via separate security if your itinerary mixes both.

EES: Live Since 10 April 2026 — Allow Extra Time on First Entry

The EU Entry/Exit System went fully operational across all 29 Schengen countries on 10 April 2026, after a six-month progressive rollout starting 12 October 2025. At KRK, first-time non-EU arrivals get fingerprints + facial scan registered instead of a passport stamp. Subsequent crossings within the 3-year biometric retention reuse the stored data and clear faster. Allow 30 min extra on first arrival during the morning long-haul wave; subsequent visits within 3 years process much faster. Over 45 million crossings have already been registered system-wide; 24,000+ refused entry.

ETIAS: Q4 2026 Launch — €20, Valid 3 Years

ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) launches Q4 2026 per March 2025 European Council confirmation. €20 fee, valid 3 years or until passport expiry, 96-hour processing window. Required for visa-exempt non-EU travellers (UK, US, Canada, Australia, NZ, etc.) before boarding any Schengen-bound flight including KRK. Apply via the official travel-europe.europa.eu/etias — avoid third-party scam sites. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens are exempt.

Customs Reality at KRK

Poland’s standard EU customs allowances apply: 1L spirits, 4L wine, 16L beer, 200 cigarettes from non-EU. Cash declaration over €10,000 equivalent on arrival/departure. Polish customs are reasonably relaxed on routine tourist traffic; expect more attention if you’re connecting from Ukraine (humanitarian context, see “Insider”). Drone declaration required.

⭐ Direct Rail to Kraków Główny — €4, 18 Minutes

The Koleje Małopolskie direct rail line runs from Kraków Lotnisko station (a 5-min sheltered walkway from the terminal) to Kraków Główny (the main central station, walking distance to the Old Town). ~17 PLN single ticket (~€4), buy at the station kiosk, vending machine, or the Koleje Małopolskie app. Every 30 min off-peak / every 20 min 06:47–17:47 peak; last train 23:37 + two post-midnight services 00:07 and 00:57. This is the locals’ default and the right answer for almost every solo or duo arrival.

🚌 Bus 252 (24h) + 300 Express — Backup Option

Two MPK Kraków bus routes serve the airport: Bus 252 (24-hour night service, the only train-down fallback for late arrivals after 00:57) and Bus 300 Express daytime service. ~6 PLN single ticket (cash, app, or contactless on board), 40–45 minutes to centre depending on traffic. Use only when train is down or you arrive in the 01:00–04:00 window — train is faster and equally affordable.

🚕 Official Airport Taxi — 89–110 PLN to Old Town

The official taxi rank is in front of arrivals, with zone flat-rates posted: ~89–110 PLN (€20–25) to Old Town / Kazimierz, slightly less to suburbs. Cards accepted in most KRK official taxis; cash PLN works everywhere. Avoid “greeter” touts who approach in arrivals — use the marked rank only. Tipping: round up or 10%.

📱 Bolt, Uber & Free Now — €11–16 to Centre

Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing app in Poland (Estonian, the most widely used in Kraków), with Uber and Free Now (formerly mytaxi) as alternatives. 50–70 PLN typical fare to centre (~€11–16), in-app payment. Pickup zone is signposted from arrivals — drivers will message you the zone code. Surge runs 1.5–2× during morning rush + Friday evening summer peak but stays well below the 3–5× LAS sees. For 2+ travellers with luggage, Bolt is often the best cost-time tradeoff when train timetables don’t align.

✨ Krakow Airport Business Lounge (Schengen, between Gates 9 & 10)

If you eat once at KRK, eat pierogi (Polish stuffed dumplings — meat, cabbage-and-mushroom, sauerkraut, or sweet variants) at the Business Lounge or any of the Polish-themed airside stalls, ~25–40 PLN (~€6–9) for a portion. Kotlet schabowy (breaded pork cutlet) is the Polish flag dish at sit-down spots, ~35–55 PLN. Żurek (sour rye soup with sausage and egg) is the regional Małopolska soup that almost no foreign airport food court does justice. Skip the airport McDonald’s — Polish comfort food at KRK is genuinely solid for an airport.

The obwarzanek krakowski is a chewy braided ring-bread sold from blue Old Town carts — Kraków’s signature snack and a EU Protected Geographical Indication item. ~4–6 PLN each from the carts in town, slightly more at the airport. Buy a couple before security or at the airside shop — they keep for 6+ hours and are the cheapest authentic Kraków souvenir. Plain salt or sesame are the locals’ picks, the trendy poppy-seed and cheese versions are tourist-targeted.

Take-home picks at KRK duty-free: Polish vodka (Belvedere, Chopin, Sobieski, Wyborowa Exquisite — all distinctly different from Russian/Estonian neighbours), Baltic amber jewellery (verify authenticity certificate; the Cloth Hall in Old Town is cheaper but the airport version is convenient), Wieliczka salt-mine artisan products (salt blocks, salt scrubs, lamps), Polish chocolate (Wedel Ptasie Mleczko bird’s-milk bars are iconic). Skip the airport-priced amber jewellery — Old Town stalls are 30–50% cheaper for similar quality.

Kraków’s Old Town has been UNESCO-listed since 1978 — one of the original 12 sites. The town hasn’t been bombed flat unlike Warsaw’s reconstruction; this is original medieval fabric. Wawel Castle ticketing splits into separate timed-entry sections — book Royal Apartments + Crown Treasury online or queue from 09:00. Wieliczka Salt Mine (UNESCO 1978, ~14 km southeast) is a rare combined-with-Old-Town double on a single day — book the English-language tour online via wieliczka-saltmine.com, mandatory guided 1h45m tour, 90 m descent. Both are wheelchair-friendly for most of the route via secondary lifts.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial sits 70 km west of Kraków in Oświęcim. Free entry, but during high season (~10:00–16:00 high season hours) a mandatory educator-led tour is required — book on the official museum site at visit.auschwitz.org, NOT third-party resellers (which mark up 200–300%). Reach by combined Lajkonik bus + minibus from Kraków main bus station (~90 min, ~25 PLN), or organised day-tour from Old Town (€40–60 typical, includes transport + entry). This is heavy travel — allow 4–6 hours emotional decompression afterwards and don’t plan dinner immediately afterwards.

Kraków’s Old Town has been a notorious British and Irish stag-do destination for two decades — Floriańska, Plac Mariacki, Rynek pubs concentrate the heaviest crowds Thursday–Saturday evenings. If you’re a quieter traveller, base in Kazimierz (the Jewish Quarter, 10 min walk south) — independent cafés, jazz bars (Alchemia, Singer), Plac Nowy zapiekanki trucks open till 04:00. Stag-do energy concentrates after 22:00; pre-22:00 Old Town is fine for everyone. Polish nightlife rule: locals expect noise to ease after midnight in residential blocks; the central pub crawl scene runs to 03:00–04:00 in the licensed core.

Kraków has hosted significant Ukrainian refugee population since February 2022, and the impact remains visible in 2026 — Ukrainian-language signage in city-centre shops, Cyrillic menus in some Kazimierz cafés, Ukrainian-pierogi (varenyky) variants alongside Polish menu items. Polish customs may pay extra attention to passengers connecting from Ukraine (humanitarian visa-holders, dual passport-holders); standard tourist traffic from Western Europe and North America is unaffected. Donations to Ukrainian humanitarian causes are visible at the airport, hostels, and cafés — most are legitimate Polish or Ukrainian-government coordinated channels, not scams.

Poland is in the EU but NOT in the Eurozone — the local currency is the Polish złoty (PLN), trading at ~4.30–4.50 PLN per EUR in 2026. Cards (Visa / Mastercard / Amex) are accepted everywhere including buses and small shops; cash is useful at Cloth Hall stalls, Hala Targowa flea market, Kazimierz milk bars, and tipping. Avoid the airport Euronet ATMs — they offer predatory FX with hidden 8–12% margins. Use PKO BP, Santander, or Bank Pekao branded ATMs instead (in the city, not all airports), or just use your card directly with no DCC (always “charge in PLN”).

EU travellers: roaming via your home plan covers Poland at the same price as your home country (Roam-Like-At-Home rules apply). UK travellers post-Brexit: most major UK carriers re-introduced surcharges (~£2/day) for EU roaming, so a Polish SIM (Orange, Play, Plus, T-Mobile) at ~25–40 PLN for 30 days / 20 GB can save real money on stays over a week. Non-EU travellers: eSIM via Airalo / Holafly / Ubigi from ~$5–10 for 7-day Poland coverage. 5G covers central Kraków, spotty in some Old Town basements (medieval thick walls).
