Niamey sits on the Niger River, and the river is the point — head to La Corniche at dawn, when pirogues work the water and you can sometimes spot hippos downstream of the Kennedy Bridge. The Grand Marché, the city's oldest, is the other anchor: a dense sprawl of indigo cloth, dried fish, spices, and charcoal-grilled brochettes.
