🛫 Single Terminal — Schengen + Non-Schengen Airside

Airlines: Lufthansa Group (Frankfurt, Munich), KLM/Air France, Iberia, Vueling, easyJet, Ryanair (limited at VCE itself), British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar, plus seasonal long-haul (United, Delta, Air Canada to NA; Korean Air, ANA seasonal).

Layout: Compact terminal compared to FCO or MXP. Walking distances are short; main concern is the dock walkway, not gate-to-gate movement.

⛴️ The 10-Minute Dock Walkway

The airport dock is a covered moving walkway approximately 10 minutes from baggage claim. Alilaguna waterbuses, water taxis, and shared boats all depart from here. Allow 30 minutes from gate to dock if you’re catching a specific Alilaguna sailing.

EES — Fully Operational Since 10 April 2026

All non-EU passport holders are biometrically registered on first entry: 4-finger fingerprint + facial photo. Subsequent entries auto-match. First-time registration adds 10–15 minutes. VCE has self-service kiosks at non-Schengen entry. Schengen-internal arrivals bypass border control entirely.

ETIAS — Coming Q4 2026

The €7 pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals (UK, US, Canada, Australia) launches autumn 2026. Not required yet at writing; verify before departure. EU/EEA citizens are unaffected.

Security: 3D CT Lanes Standard

VCE upgraded to 3D CT scanners on most lanes — laptops and liquids stay in the upgraded lanes (verify signage). EU max 2-litre liquid container size. Wait time typically 8–18 minutes, less than peak Italian airports.

⭐ Alilaguna Waterbus — €18 to San Marco

Three Alilaguna lines: Blue (Linea Blu) serves the western route to Ferrovia (Santa Lucia railway station) via Murano, Lido, San Marco, Cruise Terminal. Orange (Linea Arancio) takes a shorter direct route to Ferrovia via Madonna dell’Orto, Rialto, San Marco. Red (Linea Rossa) is seasonal connecting San Marco via Murano and Lido.

🚌 ATVO Bus to Piazzale Roma — €10 / 25 min

The ATVO Express coach runs from outside arrivals to Piazzale Roma in Venice (the mainland-side hub) in 25 minutes. €10 single, €18 return. Frequency every 15 minutes peak. From Piazzale Roma you must transfer to vaporetto (Venice public boat) to reach hotel — adds 30+ min and €9.50 vaporetto fare.

🚤 Water Taxi — €120–160 Private / €35 Shared

The fastest and most romantic option. Private water taxi picks you up at the airport dock, deposits you at your hotel’s private water entrance — €120–160 for up to 4 passengers. Shared water taxi €35 per person, slower but cheaper. ~30 min direct journey to most central Venice hotels.

✨ Marco Polo Club Lounge (post-security, Schengen + non-Schengen access)

VCE’s lounge bench is smaller than Rome FCO or Milan MXP. Verify Priority Pass acceptance on the app within 48 hours of travel. Some seasonal lounges open only during peak summer; the Marco Polo Club Lounge is the year-round constant.

Aperol Spritz was invented in Venice in the 1920s — the airport bars all serve a credible version for €8–12. Skip Heineken or generic beer; aperitivo is the Venetian way. The proper Spritz: Aperol + Prosecco + Soda + olive (NOT lemon — that’s the British version).

Cicchetti are Venetian small plates — €2–6 per piece (baccalà mantecato, sardine in saor, polpette). VCE’s airside food court has versions from major Venetian chains. Skip airport pizza-by-the-slice — it’s sub-par; cicchetti are the Venice-specific snack. Cicchetti + Spritz = the correct €15–20 airside meal.

Take-home picks: Murano glass (verify the certification stamp at the airport boutiques — fakes from China are common; airport stocks reputable artisans), Carnival masks (handmade papier-mâché from Venice), Prosecco DOCG at €15–25 per bottle airside duty-free, Aperol for the Spritz home recreation. Avoid airport-priced gondolier hats and souvenir t-shirts — Venice city centre stalls are 30–50% cheaper.

From 3 April – 26 July 2026, on certain peak days, every visitor entering Venice is required to pay an admission fee of €5–10/day directly to the Venice Municipality. Pay online at the official Venice tourist tax portal before arrival. Random spot checks at Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia railway station; show your QR code if asked. Various exclusions apply (overnight hotel stays are exempt — the tourist tax is on the bed-night, not entry).

Venice tap water is among Italy’s best — sourced from Alpine springs via the Venetian aqueduct. Drinkable everywhere including VCE airport washroom taps. Public drinking fountains exist throughout Venice (look for the brass spigots in campos / squares) — refill from these, not from kiosks. Bottled water at Italian airport kiosks runs €2.50–4 for 500 ml; refill, don’t buy.

Venice’s acqua alta (high water) floods the city most often October–March during the “Sirocco wind + spring tide” combination. The MOSE barriers activated in 2020 have substantially reduced major flooding, but minor “wet feet” floods still occur. Hotels offer raised boardwalks. Alilaguna and airport service is rarely affected (the airport dock is on the lagoon, not the city flood-prone areas).

EU/EEA visitors: your home plan covers Italy free under Roam Like At Home — do nothing. UK/US/non-EU visitors: the TIM, Vodafone Italia, and WindTre kiosks at VCE arrivals sell tourist eSIMs for €15–25 / 30 days. Or buy on Airalo / Holafly for €5–10 less before landing. 5G coverage is universal across Venice.

Venice has very low violent crime and is widely regarded as among Italy’s safest cities for solo female travellers. Pickpocketing is the main risk in tourist crowds (Rialto, San Marco). Keep bag straps tight. For a 23:00+ arrival, prefer Alilaguna direct to your hotel zone over walking through deserted side calli at night. Hotels universally offer 24-hour reception.

Italian VAT (IVA) is 22% — typically included in restaurant menu prices and shop tags. Non-EU residents can claim a refund on purchases over €70 from participating shops. The VAT refund counter is in the non-Schengen departures area at VCE. Tipping: 10% on restaurant subtotals (5–10% if service is added as “coperto”). Lyft/Uber-style apps don’t operate in Venice — water taxi tip 10%, hotel porters €1–2 per bag.

Uber does NOT operate in Venice (the Italian taxi unions blocked it). FreeNow works for taxis on the mainland (between airport and Piazzale Roma) but not within Venice itself. Within the city centre, gondolas (€80+ for 30 min, romantic), private water taxis (€120+ private), and walking are your options. Most Venetian hotels are walkable from a vaporetto stop.
