Port Vila wraps around Mele Bay on Efate, and the genuinely odd thing to do is just offshore: Hideaway Island has the world's first underwater post office, where you snorkel out to a submerged letterbox and mail a waterproof postcard (400 vatu, stamp included). Eat lap lap, the national dish — grated yam, taro or banana baked with coconut cream in banana leaves; the best comes freshly dug from the stone oven at the back of the Central Market. Wash it down with kava if you're brave. Come May–October, the dry season: warm days around 24°C, low humidity, calm water — though that's also peak season, so book fares early. The cheap months, December–March, run warmer but wet and inside cyclone season, so here the bargain fares and the good weather don't line up.
