🌍 About Guatemala City
Most travelers fly into Guatemala City and head straight for Antigua an hour away — but the capital earns a day. La Aurora airport sits right inside town in Zona 13, so it's an easy stopover either way. Zona 1 is the historic core, with the National Palace and Plaza Mayor; Zona 4 is the more interesting half — a district of converted warehouses, street art and good restaurants that locals call the Brooklyn of Guatemala. Order pepián, the national dish: a dark, thick meat stew built on toasted seeds and dried chiles, nothing like a regular soup. At around 1,500m the climate stays mild all year. Come November–April for dry, sunny days and cool nights; May–October brings reliable afternoon rain but cheaper, quieter trips.
