🏗️ The Airport

NCL is a single-terminal operation at Woolsington and the busiest airport in the north-east of England. The bulk of its 80-odd destinations are leisure routes — easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair and TUI carve up the sun and ski market — but it carries real connecting weight too. Emirates runs a daily Dubai service that links the north-east to Asia and Australasia via one stop, British Airways maintains a Heathrow shuttle for onward connections, and KLM feeds the Amsterdam hub. Outside school-holiday Monday mornings the security hall is manageable; it is not Heathrow.

🛂 Border & Entry

NCL operates under the UK border system, which is entirely separate from the EU’s.

What doesn’t apply here

The EU’s biometric Entry/Exit System (live from 10 April 2026) and the coming ETIAS travel authorisation are EU instruments. They do not operate at UK airports. UK Border Force runs the desks here, with eGates for eligible passports.

The UK ETA

Visa-exempt visitors who are not British or Irish — including all EU, EEA and Swiss citizens — need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before they fly. It costs £20 (raised from £16 on 8 April 2026), covers stays up to six months, stays valid for two years, and allows multiple entries. EU citizens have needed it since April 2025. British and Irish citizens travel under the Common Travel Area and need nothing.

The currency is the pound sterling throughout.

🚇 Getting Into the City

Because the Metro is so direct and cheap, a taxi is a luxury rather than a necessity. If you want one it will cost around £20–25 and take about 20 minutes — but most travellers simply walk down to the platform.

From Central Station the Metro continues to the Quayside, Gateshead and south to Sunderland and the coast. The mainline rail station is co-located for trains further north and south.

🛋️ Lounge

The single airside lounge is the Aspire Lounge, with food, drinks and shower facilities. It is accessible on a pay-at-the-door basis and through the standard lounge-membership networks.

✈️ Long-Haul & Connections

The Emirates daily Dubai flight is the airport’s most useful long-haul asset. For north-east passengers without easy access to Manchester or Heathrow, it is a practical one-stop route to all of Asia and Australasia. British Airways operates the Heathrow shuttle for passengers whose connections require Terminal 5 or a wider BA network link, and KLM connects to Amsterdam Schiphol for Skyteam onward routing.

🍺 Food & Drink Before You Fly

The north-east has a local food culture worth knowing before a generic airport meal tempts you.

Saveloy dip is the other local hot sandwich worth finding. The beer is Newcastle Brown Ale — the city’s famous amber-bottled lager — and the north-east is the birthplace of Greggs, the bakery chain that began in Newcastle and has since exported its sausage roll to the rest of the country. For the carry-home, a few bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale or north-east ales clear customs without issue and are priced in sterling.

💡 Newcastle on a Layover

Newcastle’s heart is the Quayside, the riverbank where the famous bridges cross the Tyne. The Tyne Bridge — the great green steel arch — and the tilting Gateshead Millennium Bridge are both there, along with the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Sage Gateshead music venue on the south bank. In the city centre, Grainger Town — the Georgian grid around Grey Street and Grey’s Monument — is the architectural set-piece, and underrated for it. The Bigg Market and Quayside form the nightlife core, which is a destination in its own right rather than a stopping-off point.

The region’s most photographed landmark is not in the city at all: the Angel of the North, Antony Gormley’s vast rust-steel figure with a 54-metre wingspan, stands beside the A1 at Gateshead, a short Metro-plus-bus or taxi detour south.

• If you are EU, EEA or Swiss: the UK ETA is required before you fly, costs £20 and takes minutes to apply for online.
• EES and ETIAS are EU systems and do not apply here.
• The pound sterling is the currency; euros are not accepted as a matter of course.
• The Emirates Dubai flight is the north-east’s most practical long-haul gateway — one stop to Asia and Australasia is a real alternative for passengers in the region to driving to Manchester.
