Tétouan Sania Ramel Airport (TTU) — Airport Guide 2026
Five kilometres from one of Morocco’s most undervisited UNESCO medinas, TTU punches above its size: the airport is small, the transfers are fast, and the city it serves is genuinely worth a layover in a way that most small regional airports are not.

🏢 Terminal & Schedule
Single terminal, single set of gates. The schedule is a mix of European low-cost and charter — Ryanair, TUI fly Belgium, and Iberia running to Spain, France, and Belgium — Air Arabia Maroc filling out connections to the Moroccan diaspora in Europe, and Royal Air Maroc handling the domestic bridge via Casablanca. Most of the traffic is seasonal: the diaspora peaks in summer, the beach season at Martil and M’diq drives the charter load, and in shoulder season the airport is quiet to the point of being slightly subdued. Security and immigration move quickly; the small terminal is one of its advantages.
🛂 Border & Visa
TTU is Morocco — not an EU/Schengen point, not Ceuta, not Spain. Two routes in:
Visa-free: Citizens of the US, UK, EU/Schengen states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and around 60 other countries enter for up to 90 days on a valid passport. No stamp required in advance, no form to pre-fill.
e-Visa: For nationalities not on that list, or for holders of a valid US/EU/UK residence permit who may qualify under Morocco’s e-Visa programme. Apply online at the official Moroccan e-Visa portal; the visa is valid for 180 days from issue for a 30-day stay. Check your nationality before travelling — the list shifts.
⚠️ Ceuta is a different border
The Spanish enclave of Ceuta sits just to the north and is EU/Schengen territory with its own crossing. It is not a casual side trip from TTU — it is a separate international border. Don’t assume your Moroccan visa or your EU passport makes the crossing trivial.
🚕 Getting Into the City
No rail. The saving grace is the distance: 5 km to the centre is short enough that the absence of a metro doesn’t sting.
🚕 Grand Taxi — 100–150 MAD, a few minutes
The airport rank will open with an inflated quote. Agree the fare before you get in. The drive is genuinely quick at 5 km — there’s no long motorway purgatory here. Agree first; that’s the only real rule.
Local buses run to Tétouan for a fraction of the taxi fare and are fine if you have patience and manageable luggage. Uber and Cabify operate in the area as an alternative to the taxi rank if you’d rather have a price locked in before the conversation starts.
For the beach towns of Martil and M’diq — about 10–15 km east along the coast — a taxi or pre-arranged transfer is the practical call. There is no direct bus route worth relying on with luggage.
🛋️ Lounges
🛋️ Swissport Departures Lounge — pay-in; Priority Pass unconfirmed
Swissport took over lounge operations at Sania Ramel in 2025. There is seating, refreshments, and a quieter environment than the gate area. Priority Pass acceptance is not confirmed here — do not book based on your network card getting you in. Treat it as a pay-in lounge and check the rate on the day.
For a small regional airport this is more than many in the same tier offer, but the verification caveat is real. If your card doesn’t work, the gate area is serviceable — the waits at TTU are rarely long.
💵 The Dirham — Closed Currency
The Moroccan dirham (MAD) cannot be bought or exchanged outside Morocco. This is not a quirk or a technicality — it is the rule, and it has practical consequences:
⚠️ You Cannot Take More Than 2,000 MAD Out
Get your cash on arrival at the ATM or exchange desk, spend it down, and convert any remaining balance back before you leave — keep your exchange receipts, which are required for the reconversion. The medina’s shops and the taxis run on cash; cards work in the city and at the airport, but have dirham in hand for anything in the old town.
Morocco is loosening the dirham’s currency peg incrementally through 2026, so rates may move slightly, but the export restriction holds regardless. The approximate rates are ~10 MAD/USD and ~11 MAD/EUR as a working baseline — use an ATM for the real rate rather than the airport desk if you have the choice.
🍽️ Food Before You Fly
Tétouan’s kitchen carries its Andalusian inheritance in a way that most Moroccan cities don’t: the city was settled by Muslims and Jews expelled from Spain, and the cooking shows it in refined pastry work and subtler spicing than the Marrakech-tourist baseline.
🍋 Tetouani Sweets — almond-and-honey pastries
These are the carry-home item. Almond-and-honey pastries, distinct from the briouat you’ll find everywhere, are a Tétouan speciality. Pick them up in the medina rather than the airport and they’re a fraction of the price. They clear customs fine within the allowance.
Fresh Mediterranean fish from the nearby coast and a well-made tagine are the practical on-the-ground targets. Sweet mint tea is the default between courses and after — declining it is mildly rude. Tipping around 5–10% is standard.
For the carry-home: Tetouani pastries or local honey within your customs allowance. Priced in dirham.
💡 Layover Math & the UNESCO Medina
Tétouan’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and among the most complete and intact in Morocco — a dense white-walled Andalusian-Moroccan warren of souks, workshops, and residential houses that sees far fewer tourists than Fès or Marrakech. The city earned its nickname “White Dove” from the whitewashed houses stacked up the Rif foothills. The Royal Palace and the Hispano-Moorish Ensanche (the Spanish colonial quarter) round out the picture.
The layover math is unusually good because of that 5 km:
🕐 3–4 Hour Layover → UNESCO Medina
Taxi to the medina: a few minutes. Wander the souks and the white lanes. Taxi back, add a 90-minute security buffer. This is comfortable and worth doing — the medina is the efficient single target at this timescale.
🏖️ 5+ Hours → Martil or M’diq Beach
The Mediterranean coast is 10–15 km east. A five-hour layover can stretch to include the beach. Do the rough taxi time and security buffer math before committing.
Under three hours: stay airside. You will not clear the medina comfortably and return with margin.
Ceuta and Tangier are not layover options. Both are within reach geographically — Ceuta to the north, Tangier to the west — but both involve separate border crossings and the time is not there on a standard connection. They are day trips or trips, not layover targets.
🧭 Before You Go
- Agree the taxi fare before you get in. The airport rank opens high.
- Visa-free for 90 days if you hold a US, UK, EU, Canadian, or similar passport. Check the e-Visa route if you don’t.
- Dirham only exists inside Morocco. Get it on arrival; take out no more than 2,000 MAD; keep exchange receipts.
- The Swissport lounge is pay-in until you confirm otherwise. Do not assume Priority Pass works.
- Ceuta is Schengen and a separate international crossing — not an extension of the Tétouan day.
