Viracopos is a large, modern single-passenger-terminal airport at Campinas, and it lives and breathes Azul — VCP is the airline’s principal hub, so the great majority of flights here are Azul’s domestic network fanning out across Brazil, with some international and cargo (Viracopos is one of Brazil’s biggest cargo airports). It is well-run and spacious. The defining issue is geography: it sits about 100 km from São Paulo city and only about 20 km from Campinas, so a São Paulo-bound traveller faces a real road journey, while Campinas itself is close.

VCP uses Brazil’s entry system, which is neither the EU’s nor anyone else’s — and which changed for several big nationalities in 2025.

• EU and UK citizens are visa-free for tourism up to 90 days (extendable once to 180 in any 12 months); the UK has been visa-free since January 2024.

There is no rail link at the airport. The way in is by road, and the route depends on your destination.

To São Paulo city: intercity coaches (operators such as Lirabus/VB) run from the airport to São Paulo’s Barra Funda and Tietê terminals in about 1.5–2 hours, from around R$17 one-way — cheap, but it is a real journey, so factor it into your timing. Crucially, Azul runs a free shuttle for its own passengers between Viracopos and points in São Paulo (Congonhas airport, Shopping Eldorado, Tamboré, Barra Funda) — check Azul’s site for times if you are flying Azul, as it can save the coach fare entirely.

To Campinas city: much shorter (about 20 km) by local bus or taxi/ride-hail. Ride-hailing apps (Uber/99) operate widely and are the simplest door-to-door option for either city; agree nothing with unbooked drivers at the kerb.

Pay in reais; cards (including contactless) are accepted almost everywhere in Brazil, and Pix (the instant-payment system) dominates locally, but carry some cash for small vendors. São Paulo state has Brazil’s deepest food scene; the airport staples to grab are pão de queijo (cheese bread), a coxinha (the teardrop chicken croquette), and a brigadeiro for something sweet, washed down with a strong cafézinho. For the carry-home, good Brazilian coffee. Tipping is modest — a service charge is usually already on restaurant bills.

This is where the distance bites. Campinas, 20 km away, is a large university-and-tech city (home to Unicamp) with a cathedral, the Bosque dos Jequitibás park and a solid food scene, but it is not a headline tourist destination. São Paulo, 100 km south, is the real draw — the vast, restless megacity of Avenida Paulista, the MASP art museum, Ibirapuera Park and the best dining in South America — but it is a long way from Viracopos.

The layover math: be realistic. São Paulo is not a layover from VCP — at 100 km and 1.5–2 hours each way by coach, the round trip needs a full day, not a connection window. Campinas is reachable on a four-to-five-hour layover by taxi or ride-hail (about 20 km) if you want a meal and a look at the centre, with a return-security buffer, but there is no single unmissable sight that demands it. For most connecting passengers, the lounge and airside are the sensible move; if you genuinely need São Paulo, build it into the itinerary, not the layover.
