🌍 About Bodrum
Bodrum sits on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, and the Mausoleum here — the tomb King Mausolus's wife built around 350 BC — is literally the word's origin. It's ruins now (earthquakes flattened it), but its stones live on in Bodrum Castle, built by the Knights of St. John from 1402 and today the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, full of Bronze Age shipwreck cargo. The dish to order is çökertme kebabı: thin beef over matchstick-fried potatoes with garlic yogurt, born in a village just up the coast. Bodrum is a hot, glossy summer town — yachts, late nights — so July and August are crowded and pricey. Come May–June or September–October instead: warm sea, thinner crowds, and the cheaper fares line up with genuinely good weather.
