Brindisi has been a port since antiquity, the point where the Appian Way met the sea and Roman travellers boarded ships for the East — a lone marble column still marks the spot above the harbour steps. It is the unsung gateway to Puglia and the Salento, the sun-baked heel of Italy, and a likeable town in its own right. The whitewashed old centre hides the round Templar church of San Giovanni al Sepolcro and a cathedral rebuilt over medieval foundations. Eat orecchiette, the little ear-shaped pasta tossed with turnip tops, and burrata so fresh it weeps cream. The waterfront promenade fills for the evening passeggiata. From here the trulli of Alberobello, baroque Lecce, and the Adriatic beaches are all within easy reach.
