Saint-Denis is the capital of Réunion, a full French department in the Indian Ocean, and the place to feel that is Rue de Paris — a street of restored Creole mansions with deep wraparound verandas; the tourist office occupies one, Maison Carrère. Walk down to the Barachois, the seafront promenade, where a line of old coastal-defence cannons still points out at the ocean. Eat rougail saucisse — smoked sausage in a tomato-and-chilli relish, a technique borrowed from Madagascar — or a cari, the local curry built on turmeric and ginger with none of the cream of an Indian one. Come May to October: the austral winter is dry and cool, the hiking weather people actually fly in for. Avoid January to March, when cyclones and the year's heaviest rain hit this north coast.
