🌍 About Ghulja
Ghulja — officially Yining — sits in the Ili Valley of far northwest Xinjiang, an hour from the Kazakhstan border, and feels more Central Asian than Chinese: Uyghur and Kazakh, not Han. The thing to see is Kazanqi, a quarter of roughly 300 Qing-era courtyard houses painted in deep blue — doors, window frames, porches, all of it — where you get around by blue horse-drawn carriage rather than on foot. The valley around the city grows over 95% of China's lavender; the fields near Huocheng, about an hour out, peak in mid-June before the July harvest. Eat the barrel-fermented yogurt and drink Kazakh milk tea, both genuinely local. Come June to October for grassland, fruit and flowers; mid-June for the lavender specifically. Winters are long and bitterly cold.
