🌍 Pier B — Non-Schengen

Airlines: Brussels Airlines long-haul (Africa, US), United, Delta, BA, Emirates, Qatar, Turkish, Royal Air Maroc, Ethiopian, Rwandair, Air Canada, plus most other non-EU long-haul.

Lounges: Diamond Lounge Pier B (Priority Pass) opposite Gates B01–B05; Brussels Airlines Sunrise Lounge as the temporary premium option until THE LOFT reopens Summer 2026.

ETIAS Activating Q4 2026

European Travel Information and Authorisation System for visa-exempt non-EU passengers (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Korea, etc.). Online application 96 h before departure, €7, valid 3 years. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and existing Schengen visa holders do not need it. Verify activation status on the official European Commission site shortly before travel.

EU/EEA Autogates & EES

EU/EEA/Swiss passport holders aged 12+ can use the automated e-gates at Pier B — biometric chip, under 20 seconds. EES (Entry/Exit System) rolling out late 2026 for non-EU passengers — fingerprint and face capture replace the passport stamp. First arrival adds 5–10 min; subsequent arrivals are noticeably faster.

Standard Security

BRU has not yet completed the CT scanner rollout as of mid-2026. Most lanes still run older X-ray equipment — liquids ≤100 ml in a clear bag, laptops out, belt and shoes off when prompted. Allow 20–35 minutes for security depending on the wave.

⭐ SNCB Train — The Default Pick

Brussels Airport-Zaventem station is directly under the terminal — no shuttle needed. Direct train to Brussels Central, Brussels Nord and Brussels Midi in 17–25 minutes. Operated by SNCB (Belgian Railways); some trains continue to Antwerpen, Liège, Charleroi, and even Amsterdam.

🚌 STIB Airport Line 12 / 21 — The EU Quarter Route

STIB bus 12 (peak) and 21 (off-peak) connects the airport to Schuman (EU Commission), Trône, Place Luxembourg (European Parliament) and downtown. €2.10 single, ~30 minutes journey. The cheapest option for hotel destinations in the EU quarter; slower than the train but a more useful destination for diplomats and consultants.

🚕 Taxi, Bolt, Heetch & FREENOW

Belgian taxis run a regulated meter — €45–55 to central Brussels. Bolt and Heetch (French rideshare with strong Brussels presence) typically €30–45 off-peak and pre-bookable. FREENOW aggregates regulated taxis at meter rate. Pickup zones are signposted outside arrivals.

✨ Diamond Lounge (Pier A opp. Gate A42 + Pier B opp. Gates B01–B05)

If you buy one Belgian thing at BRU, it’s a box of pralines — Belgian filled chocolates, the country’s national gift. Neuhaus, Leonidas, Godiva, Mary, Pierre Marcolini all have airport boutiques. Mary and Pierre Marcolini are the connoisseur picks; Leonidas is the budget mainstream. Vacuum-sealed boxes survive 24h at room temperature; refrigerate on arrival.

Belgian frites (twice-fried, served in a paper cone with mayo) are the country’s actual unofficial national dish. Frituur No. 1 at the Connector food court serves a credible airport version. The accompanying sauces — andalouse, samourai, mayo, ketjap — are part of the experience. Skip McDonald’s; you’re in the country that invented modern fries.

Belgium is the home of Tintin, the Smurfs, Spirou, Lucky Luke and Asterix. The airport bookshops carry Tintin albums in 30+ languages at city-comparable prices, plus collectible figurines. Belgian beer (Chimay, Westmalle, Duvel, Orval) is available at duty-free; carry-on weight limits matter — pick 2–3 abbey beers rather than a case.

Belgium has frequent scheduled labour strikes (greve / staking) affecting SNCB rail and Brussels Airlines, often around national protest days or sectoral disputes. They’re typically announced 7–14 days in advance. Check SNCB strike notices and Brussels Airlines travel updates before flying. Minimum service usually keeps the airport rail link partially running.

Brussels hosts an EU summit roughly every 6–8 weeks during the political calendar (October–June). Delegations from 27 member states + observers fill the morning short-haul wave at BRU. Schuman / EU quarter is gridlocked on summit days — for hotel transfers in that area, use the SNCB train rather than a taxi or Bolt. Schedules are published on the European Council site months in advance.

Brussels is officially bilingual French + Dutch; airport signage runs in three languages (FR/NL/EN). All staff speak English. Dutch “Brussel” + French “Bruxelles” = same place; signage flips between depending on which sub-region you’re in (the airport is in Flemish Brabant, so Brussel-Zaventem on signage). Don’t panic if your boarding pass says one and the train station the other.

Brussels tap water is safe and clean, drawn from the Bois de la Cambre and Meuse aquifers. Refill at any airside washroom or drinking fountain. Don’t pay €3–4 for sealed water; the tap version is genuinely better and free.

EU roaming covers any EU-issued SIM at no extra cost. Non-EU visitors: Proximus, Orange, Base have kiosks in arrivals — €15–20 for a 30-day data + voice tourist bundle. eSIM versions activate instantly via QR code. 5G coverage is excellent across Brussels.

Brussels is generally safe for solo travellers. The SNCB airport train runs to ~midnight; from then to ~05:30 the airport is taxi-only. Bolt and Heetch have in-app safety features. The Brussels Nord neighbourhood (around the train station) feels rougher than the rest of the city late at night — for hotels there, consider Bolt or a metered taxi over walking from the station.
