The 19-minute Flytoget that’s ending in December 2027, the cheaper Vy regional trains on the same tracks, the SAS-to-SkyTeam alliance shake-up, the merged SAS Lounge that landed October 2025, and why Norway uses kroner not euros despite the Schengen membership.

🏢 1. Terminal Architecture: Single Building, Multiple Piers

OSL runs a single large terminal with multiple piers — Pier A (Schengen + domestic), Pier B (non-Schengen), Pier C and D (additional Schengen + non-Schengen). Designed by Nordic architects, the terminal opened in 1998 and was significantly expanded in 2017 (the “OSL Tower” expansion). Domestic and international zones are clearly signposted from the central concourse.

🛫 Schengen Piers — Domestic + Intra-EU

Airlines: SAS (now SkyTeam since 1 Sept 2024), Norwegian, Widerøe, KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Finnair, plus all Schengen low-cost (Wizz, Ryanair, easyJet).

Vibe: The wider concourse with most retail and restaurants. Airside-connected to non-Schengen via a passport-control crossing.

Norwegian carrier presence: SAS leads, with Norwegian Air Shuttle as the dominant LCC — both based at OSL. Widerøe operates regional turboprops to small Norwegian cities.

🌍 Non-Schengen Piers — Long-Haul + UK

Airlines: Emirates, Qatar, Turkish, Ethiopian, Air Canada, United, Delta long-haul, Norwegian long-haul (UK/USA), British Airways, Wizz UK routes.

Vibe: Slightly tighter than Schengen piers. Pier E (international Pier E2) hosts the OSL Lounge International — the standout walk-in option.

22:00–01:00 long-haul wave covers Asia (TOK, ICN, Doha) + North America. Build margin during these hours; Schengen-to-non-Schengen connection requires a passport-control crossing.

🛂 2. Schengen, ETIAS Q4 2026 & Border Tech

Norway is in the Schengen Area (since 2001) but NOT in the European Union — it’s a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) instead. For passport / visa purposes Schengen rules apply; for trade and customs Norway has its own arrangement.

🇪🇺

ETIAS Activating Q4 2026

European Travel Information and Authorisation System for visa-exempt non-EU passengers (US, UK, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, Korea, etc.). Online application 96 h before departure, €7, valid 3 years. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and existing Schengen visa holders do not need it. Verify activation status on the official European Commission site shortly before travel.

🤖

EU/EEA Autogates & EES

EU/EEA/Swiss passport holders aged 12+ can use automated e-gates at non-Schengen Pier B/E. EES (Entry/Exit System) rolling out late 2026 for non-EU passengers — fingerprint and face capture replace the passport stamp. First arrival adds 5–10 min; subsequent arrivals are noticeably faster.

🛡️

Standard Security

OSL has begun trialing CT scanners on selected fast-track lanes. Most lanes still run older X-ray — liquids ≤100 ml in a clear bag, laptops out. Belt and shoes off when prompted. Allow 15–30 minutes depending on the wave; 06:30–08:30 is the worst.

🇳🇴 Norway = Schengen, Not EU, Not Eurozone

Norway joined Schengen in 2001 but is not an EU member. It uses the Norwegian Krone (NOK), not the euro. €1 ≈ NOK 11.5 (varies). Norway-specific customs allowances apply (alcohol & tobacco quotas are tighter than EU intra-Schengen). Cards accepted everywhere; cash is rarely needed.

🚆 3. Transport: Flytoget vs Vy vs Flybussen

OSL sits 47 km NE of Oslo — a meaningful distance compared to most European airports. Three rail/coach options all reach the city in 19–50 minutes; the trick is the price-vs-speed-vs-frequency triangle. The Flytoget Express is closing in December 2027, replaced by integration into the Vy regional network.

⭐ Flytoget Airport Express — Fast But Sunset Ahead

Non-stop direct train to Oslo Sentralstasjon (Oslo S) in 19 minutes. Runs every 10–20 minutes from inside the OSL terminal. Air-conditioned, comfortable, with free WiFi. Service confirmed ending December 2027 — Norwegian government announced February 2026 that Flytoget would be integrated into the Vy regional network.

Single ticket:
NOK 240
Children under 16:
Free with adult
Time to Oslo S:
19 min
Service hours:
~05:30 – 24:00 daily
Tap-to-ride. Contactless Visa/Mastercard at the gate; the system charges NOK 240 automatically. No need for a paper ticket.

🚆 Vy Regional Train — Half the Price

Regional trains R10, R11, R12, R13, R14 run on the same tracks as Flytoget but stop at suburban stations en route. NOK 124 single, 22–28 minutes to Oslo S. Half the Flytoget fare for ~5 minutes more. Operated by Vy (Norwegian state rail).

Flytoget vs Vy decision rule: If your time is worth more than NOK 116, take Flytoget. Otherwise take Vy. The Vy route also serves long-distance Norwegian rail destinations (Bergen, Trondheim, Stavanger) directly from OSL — useful for onward national travel.

🚌 NOR-WAY / Flybussen Express Coach

Direct coach service to Oslo Bus Terminal (next to Oslo S). NOK 230 single, 40–50 minutes. Departures every 20 minutes, runs 24/7 — useful when the train is closed (00:00–05:30) or you arrive on a midnight long-haul. Reserved seats, luggage racks, free WiFi.

🚕 Taxi & Bolt

Norwegian taxis are famously expensive — NOK 850–1,300 to central Oslo, regulated meter, no surge but high base rate. Bolt is meaningfully cheaper at NOK 600–900, with pre-booking up to 72 hours ahead. Pickup zone is signposted outside the arrivals hall — not the immediate kerb.

⚡ Norwegian taxi pricing reality. A taxi from OSL to Oslo S is in the same range as a budget intra-Europe flight. For tight connections in winter, the Flytoget or Vy is normally faster as well as cheaper — the train is unaffected by snow on the E6 motorway.

🛋️ 4. Lounges: The Merged SAS & OSL Lounge International

OSL’s lounge map shifted in late 2024–2025. SAS joined SkyTeam on 1 September 2024; on 1 October 2025 SAS merged its Gold and Main lounges into a single shared larger lounge with premium catering. The OSL Lounge International near gate E2 is the standout walk-in option for non-Schengen long-haul.

✨ SAS Lounge (merged Gold + Main) (Schengen pier, after security)

Walk-in (online ≥3 h):
NOK 399~€34
Walk-in (≤3 h):
NOK 449 at the desk
Free for:
SAS Plus / Business · SAS EuroBonus Gold/Diamond · SkyTeam Elite Plus
Hours:
~05:00 – 22:00 daily
The 2025 merger combined SAS’s previously separate Gold and Main lounges at OSL into a single, larger space — premium catering area for top-tier travellers, larger main floor for general access. Star Alliance Gold no longer grants access since the SkyTeam switch; SkyTeam Elite Plus does. Walk-in is meaningfully cheaper booked online >3h ahead.

🌍 OSL Lounge International (near Gate E2, non-Schengen)

Walk-in NOK 445 available 3 hours before departure (subject to capacity). Open 05:15 – 20:30. Hot Nordic buffet, espresso bar, runway view from the international concourse. The standout pick for non-Schengen long-haul departures.

🦅 Aviator / Star Alliance Network (Lufthansa Group + United)

For Lufthansa-group, United, ANA, Singapore-group passengers without status, the Aviator Lounge / contract Star Alliance lounge still operates at OSL post-SAS-departure. Priority Pass / DragonPass / LoungeKey eligible — useful for Star Gold travellers no longer welcome at SAS.

📱 LoungePair Flexible Pass (All OSL contract lounges)

For ad-hoc visits, LoungePair sells SAS Lounge / OSL Lounge International access at ~NOK 350–400 for 2 hours. Useful when you arrive earlier than expected and want to lock the price before walking up to the desk.

🐟 5. Food & Shopping: Salmon, Brown Cheese & Norwegian Wool

🐟 Norwegian Salmon — The Real Thing at the Counter

Norway is the world’s largest farmed-salmon producer; Egon and Norrøna Bistro at OSL serve credible smoked-salmon plates, gravlaks (cured salmon), and salmon-on-rye open sandwiches. Skip the airport McDonald’s — the salmon counter is one of the only places in Norway where airport food is genuinely good.

🧀 Brunost (Brown Cheese) — Norway’s Strange National Specialty

Brunost is Norway’s caramelised whey-cheese — fudge-coloured, dense, slightly sweet. The airport delicatessen counters carry vacuum-sealed bricks of Tine’s Gudbrandsdalsost, the most famous variant. Travels in checked luggage only (50%+ fat content); not for hand-luggage purposes. One of the few culinary souvenirs unique to Norway.

🛍️ Norwegian Wool, Stormberg & Trolls

Norway’s outdoor-clothing brands are internationally renowned: Norrøna, Stormberg, Helly Hansen, Devold, Dale of Norway. Airport shops carry traditional Norwegian wool sweaters (kofte) at elevated airport prices but with VAT-refund possible for non-EU departing passengers. Pricier than the city, but the duty-free positioning helps. Avoid the gift-shop trolls — same products at every Norwegian airport.

💡 6. Insider Tips: Northern Lights, De-Icing & Cashless Norway

❄️ Winter De-Icing — November to March

Norwegian winters are real — −15 °C to −25 °C is normal from December through February at OSL. Every aircraft on a sub-zero day requires a de-icing pass; OSL has deep capacity but queues do form during morning rush. Build a 30–60-minute departure buffer in winter. The Flytoget and Vy trains are unaffected by snow on the E6 motorway — strongly preferred over taxi when the weather is bad.

🌌 Northern Lights / Tromsø Onward Connections

OSL is the gateway to Tromsø, Bodø, Bergen, Stavanger for Northern-Lights tourism (September–March). SAS, Norwegian and Widerøe run frequent domestic connections; build at least 90 min layover at OSL — Norwegian-domestic flights move from a different gate cluster than international Schengen. The 22:00–01:00 long-haul wave brings Asia/USA travellers connecting onward to Tromsø.

💳 Norway Is Cashless — Cards or Vipps Only

Norway is one of the most cashless societies on the planet — most OSL restaurants and shops do not accept cash. Bring a contactless Visa or Mastercard. Vipps is the dominant local payment app but requires a Norwegian bank account; foreign visitors should plan around it. Tipping is not expected (often built into prices).

💧 Tap Water — Among the World’s Best

Oslo tap water is among the cleanest in the world — drawn from the surrounding lakes (Maridalsvannet primarily) and lightly treated. Refill at any airside washroom or drinking fountain. Don’t pay NOK 35–50 for sealed water; the tap version is genuinely better.

📱 SIM Cards & eSIM

EU roaming covers Norway despite non-EU status (under EEA). Non-EU/EEA visitors: Telia, Telenor kiosks in arrivals — NOK 200–300 for 30-day data + voice. eSIM versions activate instantly. 5G coverage is excellent across Oslo and most of southern Norway.

👩 Solo Female Travellers — Among Europe’s Safest

Oslo consistently ranks among the safest European capitals for women travelling alone. The Flytoget runs to 24:00, Vy until ~midnight; both are CCTV-monitored end-to-end. NOR-WAY runs 24/7. Bolt is vetted-driver. The airport is well-policed at any hour.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Should I take Flytoget or the Vy regional train from OSL? +
Vy if your time is worth less than NOK 116, Flytoget if it’s worth more. Flytoget is NOK 240 and 19 minutes non-stop to Oslo S. Vy is NOK 124 and 22–28 minutes with suburban stops (same tracks). For a tight connection, take Flytoget; for budget travel with one bag, take Vy. Flytoget service ends in December 2027 per the February 2026 announcement; the offering will be integrated into Vy’s regional network.
Will I need ETIAS to fly into Oslo in 2026? +
Yes — for visa-exempt non-EU passengers (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, Japan, Korea, etc.) once it activates in Q4 2026. Online application 96 hours before departure, €7, valid 3 years. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and existing Schengen visa holders do not need it. Norway joined Schengen in 2001 and is part of the ETIAS scheme. Verify the current rollout status on the official European Commission site shortly before travel.
How early should I arrive at OSL? +
Schengen flights: 2 hours non-peak, 2.5 for the morning wave. Non-Schengen long-haul: 2.5–3 hours, 3.5 in winter (December–February) when de-icing routinely adds 30 minutes. The 22:00–01:00 long-haul Asia/North America wave is the busiest single block of the day.
Did SAS leave Star Alliance? Where do I go for a lounge now? +
Yes — SAS joined SkyTeam on 1 September 2024. Star Alliance Gold no longer opens the SAS Lounge at OSL. SkyTeam Elite Plus does. If you’re flying United/Lufthansa-group on Star Gold status, your lounge access at OSL is now via the Aviator / Star Alliance contract lounge (Priority Pass / DragonPass / LoungeKey eligible) or by paying the SAS Lounge walk-in (NOK 399 online ≥3h ahead, NOK 449 at desk). The SAS Gold and Main lounges merged on 1 October 2025 into a single larger lounge.
Does Norway use the euro? +
No — Norway uses the Norwegian Krone (NOK), not the euro. Norway is in Schengen but NOT in the EU; it’s an EEA member instead. €1 ≈ NOK 11.5. Cards work everywhere — Norway is one of the most cashless societies on the planet. Most OSL vendors do not accept cash at all; bring a contactless Visa or Mastercard.
Do I need to remove liquids and laptops at OSL security? +
Yes — both come out on most lanes. OSL has begun trialing CT scanners on selected fast-track lanes where liquids and laptops can stay in the bag, but the bulk of lanes still run older X-ray equipment as of mid-2026. Liquids ≤100 ml in a clear bag, laptops out, belt and shoes off. Allow 15–30 minutes; 06:30–08:30 is the worst.
Why does Flytoget service end in December 2027? +
The Norwegian government announced in February 2026 that Flytoget services would cease in December 2027 and be integrated into the Vy regional rail network. Vy already runs on the same tracks at half the price; the consolidation aims to simplify the offering. For 2026 travellers, Flytoget is still running normally — the transition is on the 2027 horizon.
Is OSL’s tap water safe to drink? +
Yes — Oslo tap water is among the cleanest in the world, drawn from Maridalsvannet and surrounding lakes. Refill at any airside washroom or drinking fountain. Don’t pay NOK 35–50 for sealed water; the tap version is genuinely better and free.
