Riga International Airport (RIX) — The Complete Master Guide 2026

airBaltic’s A220-only network reaches 70+ destinations from one of Europe’s most efficient mid-sized airports. The North Pier extension finished in 2025, EES went live with the Schengen rollout in April 2026, the airport is actually one lounge across all carriers (and Priority Pass works), and Bus 22 to the city centre still costs €1.81 — pay the driver by card.

🏢 1. One Terminal, Two Sides & the North Pier Extension

RIX runs as one terminal split between Schengen and non-Schengen airside. The North Pier extension completed in 2025 added new gates, modernized check-in, and a glass-roofed central hall — the airport now handles 8+ million passengers per year on infrastructure built for it. The walking footprint is small enough that 10 minutes from security to any gate is the worst case.

🇪🇺 Schengen Side (Gates B, C)

Airlines: airBaltic (the dominant carrier with ~75% of slots), Lufthansa Group, KLM/Air France, SAS (now SkyTeam since Sep 2024), Norwegian, Wizz Air (limited).

Layout: The newer side following the 2025 expansion. Primeclass Business Lounge sits on the third floor near Gate B1 (the only lounge at RIX). Most departures within Europe board here.

Schengen-internal arrivals are document-free. If you’re arriving from another Schengen country (Helsinki, Stockholm, Vienna, Amsterdam, etc.), walk straight to baggage. No passport check.

🌍 Non-Schengen Side (Gates A, E)

Airlines: airBaltic to UK + non-Schengen Europe + select Middle East (DXB), Turkish Airlines (IST), Wizz Air (UK), British Airways seasonal (LHR).

Layout: Smaller wing for non-Schengen departures. EES applies here — passport control and the new biometric kiosks are at the entry to this airside zone. Allow extra 15 minutes for first-time EES registration.

Connecting Schengen → non-Schengen? You pass through dedicated transit corridors with passport control and the EES kiosk. Allow 45 minutes minimum for the connection if it’s your first EES registration.
🚉 The Rail Baltica Station — Coming, Not Yet Live

The Rail Baltica high-speed station building at the airport is targeted for completion in 2026, but the actual high-speed train line through Latvia and onward to Tallinn / Warsaw isn’t scheduled to open until 2030+. The station body will be built and visible at RIX before the trains arrive — don’t plan to use it for connections in 2026 or 2027. Bus 22 / 222 remains the rail-equivalent default.

🛂 2. EES Live, ETIAS Pending & Schengen Reality 2026

2026 reshaped European border procedure. EES became fully operational on 10 April 2026; ETIAS launches Q4 2026. Latvia’s rollout was relatively painless because RIX is a small airport — the queues never reached the chaos of the bigger Schengen hubs.

📸

EES — Fully Operational Since 10 April 2026

All non-EU passport holders are biometrically registered on first entry: 4-finger fingerprint + facial photo. Subsequent entries auto-match. First-time registration adds 10–15 minutes. RIX has self-service kiosks at the non-Schengen entry to speed it up.

ETIAS — Coming Q4 2026

The €7 pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals (UK, US, Canada, Australia, etc.) launches autumn 2026 with a phased grace period. Not required yet at writing; verify before departure. EU/EEA citizens are unaffected.

🔍

Security: 3D CT Lanes

RIX upgraded to 3D CT scanners on most lanes in 2024 — laptops and liquids stay in the bag in the new lanes (verify signage). Belts and shoes generally stay on. Wait time is short — typically 5–12 minutes, even at peak. The airport’s scale keeps queues moving.

🛬 Schengen Internal Arrivals Bypass Border Control

No passport check on Schengen arrivals — walk straight to baggage. EES applies only to non-Schengen arrivals (UK, US, Israel, Turkey, etc.). Latvia is firmly Schengen, so most European travellers see no border process at all.

🚌 3. Transport: Bus 22, Bolt & the €1.81 Default

RIX is 10 km west of Riga’s Old Town — a 15–25 minute drive depending on traffic. The default mode is Bus 22 at €1.81, payable to the driver with a contactless card (one of the easiest airport-bus systems in Europe). Taxis are cheap by Western European standards; Bolt rideshare is even cheaper.

⭐ Bus 22 — The €1.81 Default

Rīgas satiksme bus 22 runs from the bus stop in P1 car park (between arrival exits E and C) to Abrenes iela in Riga via Stockmann department store and the Old Town. Journey time ~25 minutes. Frequency every 10–20 minutes during the day. Pay the driver with a contactless card or buy a ticket from the kiosk inside the terminal.

Single fare:
€1.81
Frequency:
Every 10–20 min
To Old Town:
~25 min
First / last bus:
05:30 / 23:50
Don’t forget to validate the ticket at the orange validator after boarding — even if you bought from the driver. Inspectors check, fines for invalid tickets are €30. Bus 222 is the express version, slightly faster (~20 min) for €2.00; only useful if you’re in a hurry and the 222 happens to be at the stop.

🚖 Taxi — Cheap, but Pick the Licensed Rank

Taxis are genuinely affordable in Riga compared to Western Europe. The official rank is at the kerb outside arrivals. Use the licensed-yellow rank, not greeters inside the terminal — the latter charge 2–3× the fair fare.

Old Town / Centre: €15–25
Mežaparks: €18–28
Jūrmala (Beach Resort): €25–35
Daugavpils (Far East): €120+

📱 Bolt — The Latvian-Estonian Default

Bolt is the dominant rideshare in Latvia (the Estonian-founded app). Uber operates but is much smaller. Bolt fares typically 30–40% cheaper than metered taxi for the same route. Pickup at the rideshare zone (signposted from arrivals).

Bolt to Old Town: €10–18
Bolt to Jūrmala: €18–28
Surge: Friday evening / Sunday late
Payment: in-app card
🛣️ Default-pick rule: Solo, low budget, going to Old Town hotel? Bus 22 wins — €1.81 is cheaper than any rideshare. Group of 2+ with bags? Bolt — €10–18 split is competitive with the bus and faster. Late night arrival, no luggage? Bus 22 or 222 (last bus 23:50). After midnight? Bolt or taxi.

🛋️ 4. The Primeclass Lounge — Riga’s Only One

RIX has exactly one airport lounge. The Primeclass Business Lounge serves all eligible passengers across all airlines — airBaltic Business, Finnair Business, Turkish Business, oneworld Sapphire/Emerald, Star Alliance Gold (where applicable), Priority Pass, DragonPass, LoungeKey, and walk-in payers. Located on the third floor of Pier B near Gate B1, Schengen side.

✨ Primeclass Business Lounge (3rd floor near Gate B1, Schengen side)

Walk-in price:
€55 / 3 h
Access:
Priority Pass · DragonPass · LoungeKey · airline status · paid walk-in
Hours:
05:00–23:00 daily
Sleeping suites:
Yes, extra fee
The lounge has a hot Latvian/international buffet, full bar with Latvian craft beer plus the iconic Black Balsam shot bar, free Wi-Fi, showers (free with entry), apron-facing windows. The sleeping suite is a useful add-on for early connections — beds are real, with linens; book at the entry desk for an extra fee. Get there early at peak waves (16:00–18:00 evening departure) — this is the only lounge at RIX, so it does fill up.
⚠️ Schengen-Side Only — Plan Ahead

The Primeclass Lounge is on the Schengen side near Gate B1. If your departure is from the non-Schengen side (Gates A, E), you can use the lounge before passing through passport control to non-Schengen — but allow 20+ minutes for the EES queue if it’s your first registration. Skip the non-Schengen lounge plan if your flight is in under 90 minutes.

🍞 5. Food & Shopping: Caraway Bread, Black Balsam & Amber

🍞 Latvian Rye & Cheese — The Heart of Local Food

If you eat once at RIX, eat the rupjmaize (dark Latvian rye bread) with smoked cheese at Lido Restaurant in the central concourse — €8–12 for a Latvian set. Add karbonāde (pork cutlet) for the full local plate. Latvia’s rye bread is genuinely distinctive; you won’t find this density and caraway depth at Frankfurt or Vienna airport food courts.

🥃 Riga Black Balsam — The Bottle You Can’t Buy Anywhere Else

The Riga Black Balsam bar at the Primeclass Lounge and the duty-free shop at RIX both stock the iconic 45% herbal-bitter Latvian liqueur. The original Black Balsam (1752 recipe) and the newer Black Balsam Currant (with blackcurrant) are both available. Take one home as the definitive Latvian souvenir — €15–22 for the 700 ml bottle airside, vs €25+ at most Western European duty-free that stocks it.

🛍️ Amber, Linen & Carry-Home Latvia

The take-home picks: Baltic amber jewellery (the Baltic coast is the world’s amber capital — pendants from €15, but verify authenticity stamp), Latvian linen (kitchen towels, table runners — distinctive flax weaves), Laima chocolate (the Latvian chocolate brand since 1870), Adazi pumpkin seed bread, and blackcurrant jam. Avoid airport-priced amber — Old Town shops at Doma laukums are 25%+ cheaper. Buy chocolate and Black Balsam at the airport, jewellery in town.

💡 6. Insider Tips: Russia Airspace, Rail Baltica & Quirks

✈️ airBaltic — A220-Only Fleet, Latvia’s Hub Carrier

airBaltic is unique in Europe for operating an all-Airbus A220 fleet (a smaller-aircraft hub-and-spoke model). The carrier flies to ~70 destinations across Europe and the Middle East, with Riga as the only major hub. Russia airspace closure since Feb 2022 affected airBaltic too, especially the Tashkent and Tbilisi routes that took longer reroutes. The airline’s 2026 strength is intra-EU short-haul — they’re not a long-haul player.

🚉 Rail Baltica — Coming, but Slowly

The Rail Baltica high-speed line from Tallinn through Riga to Vilnius and onward to Warsaw is under construction. The RIX station building completes in 2026, but actual high-speed train service through Latvia isn’t scheduled until 2030+. The bus connection remains the only real choice. Don’t plan around Rail Baltica for 2026 or 2027 travel — the rail line itself is years away.

🌗 Latitude — Polar Hours Affect Riga Too

Riga is only slightly south of Helsinki. December–January daylight: ~7 hours (sunrise 09:00, sunset 16:00). Summer June–July: 17+ hours. Pre-sunrise winter departures (06:00) feel psychologically dark — the airport is well-lit but jetlag amplifies. The Primeclass Lounge sleeping suites are useful.

💧 Tap Water Is Safe — Refill, Don’t Buy

Riga municipal water is safe to drink — meets EU standards, drinkable everywhere including RIX washroom taps. Free refill stations exist airside. Bottled water at the kiosks runs €2.50 for 500 ml; refill, don’t buy. Some Latvians drink only filtered water by preference, but the airport supply is unfiltered municipal and safe.

📱 SIM Cards & EU Roaming

EU/EEA visitors: your home plan covers Latvia free under Roam Like At Home — do nothing. UK/US/non-EU visitors: the LMT, Bite, and Tele2 kiosks at arrivals sell tourist eSIMs for €10–20 / 30 days. Or buy on Airalo / Holafly for €5–10 less before landing. 5G coverage is universal across Riga.

👩 Solo Female Travellers — Latvia Ranks Among Europe’s Safer Countries

Latvia consistently ranks among the safer European countries for solo female travellers. Riga’s Old Town is well-lit and police-monitored at night. For a 04:30 arrival, prefer Bolt over flagging a kerbside taxi — Bolt’s in-app tracking and metered fare are universal advantages. Hotels offer 24-hour reception. The city is small enough that 90% of tourists never go beyond the well-trafficked downtown.

💵 VAT Refund & Latvia’s Cash-Card Mix

Latvian VAT is 21%; non-EU residents can claim a refund on purchases over €50 from participating shops. The VAT Refund counter is in the non-Schengen departures area. Bring receipts and unused goods. Latvia is largely card-dominant in shops, restaurants and the airport — but small Old Town stalls and weekend markets sometimes prefer cash. Withdraw €30–50 in EUR for incidentals; ATMs at RIX are functional.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from RIX Airport to Riga Old Town? +
Three options: Bus 22 from the P1 car park stop to Abrenes iela in Old Town, €1.81 single (pay driver by contactless card), ~25 minutes; Bolt rideshare €10–18 (~15 min); Taxi €15–25 metered (~15 min). Most travellers default to Bus 22 — the price-to-time ratio is unbeatable. Bolt is the move with bags or a group.
Is the EES Entry/Exit System now live at RIX? +
Yes — EES went fully operational on 10 April 2026. Non-EU passport holders are biometrically registered on first entry (4-finger fingerprint scan + facial photo). Subsequent entries auto-match. First-time registration adds 10–15 minutes. RIX has self-service kiosks at the non-Schengen entry. Schengen-internal arrivals bypass border control entirely. ETIAS launches Q4 2026.
Is Rail Baltica connected to the airport in 2026? +
The station building is targeted for completion in 2026, but actual high-speed train service is years away. Rail Baltica is the EU-funded high-speed line that will connect Tallinn–Riga–Vilnius–Warsaw, but the rail line through Latvia isn’t scheduled to open until 2030+. Don’t plan to use Rail Baltica for connections in 2026 or 2027. Bus 22 and 222 remain the rail-equivalent default.
How early should I arrive at RIX? +
Schengen domestic / EU: 90 minutes — RIX is small and queues move fast. Non-Schengen: 2 hours minimum, 3 hours if it’s your first EES registration. Even peak waits are typically 5–12 minutes for security. The 16:00–18:00 evening departure wave is the worst time for queue volume.
Do I need to take laptops and liquids out of my bag at RIX security? +
It depends on the lane. RIX upgraded to 3D CT scanners on most lanes in 2024 — in upgraded lanes, laptops and liquids stay in the bag. Older X-ray lanes still operate; check signage at the conveyor of your specific lane. EU-wide max 2-litre liquid container size (an EU-wide reversal of the temporary 100 ml relaxation). Belt and shoes generally stay on.
What lounges can I access at RIX with Priority Pass? +
Just one — the Primeclass Business Lounge on the third floor near Gate B1, Schengen side. Walk-in €55 / 3 hours. Priority Pass, DragonPass and LoungeKey accepted. The lounge serves all eligible passengers across all airlines (airBaltic, Finnair, Turkish, oneworld, Star Alliance Gold). It’s the only lounge at RIX. Sleeping suites and showers are available for an extra fee.
What’s the deal with airBaltic and the A220 fleet? +
airBaltic is unique in Europe for operating an all-Airbus A220 fleet — a smaller-aircraft hub-and-spoke model that gets the carrier into 70+ destinations from Riga without needing wide-body capacity. The A220 is comfortable (3-2 seating, larger windows than competing aircraft) and well-suited to airBaltic’s typical 2–4 hour route lengths. Russia airspace closure since Feb 2022 added time to a few specific routes (Tashkent, Tbilisi); the bulk of the network is intra-EU short-haul which is unaffected.
Is Riga tap water safe to drink at the airport? +
Yes — Riga municipal water meets EU standards and is drinkable everywhere including RIX washroom taps. Free refill stations exist airside. Bring a refillable bottle — bottled water at the kiosks runs €2.50 for 500 ml. Some Latvians drink filtered water by preference, but the supply is unfiltered municipal and safe.
