🇪🇺 Schengen Side (Gates B, C)

Airlines: airBaltic (the dominant carrier with ~75% of slots), Lufthansa Group, KLM/Air France, SAS (now SkyTeam since Sep 2024), Norwegian, Wizz Air (limited).

Layout: The newer side following the 2025 expansion. Primeclass Business Lounge sits on the third floor near Gate B1 (the only lounge at RIX). Most departures within Europe board here.

🌍 Non-Schengen Side (Gates A, E)

Airlines: airBaltic to UK + non-Schengen Europe + select Middle East (DXB), Turkish Airlines (IST), Wizz Air (UK), British Airways seasonal (LHR).

Layout: Smaller wing for non-Schengen departures. EES applies here — passport control and the new biometric kiosks are at the entry to this airside zone. Allow extra 15 minutes for first-time EES registration.

EES — Fully Operational Since 10 April 2026

All non-EU passport holders are biometrically registered on first entry: 4-finger fingerprint + facial photo. Subsequent entries auto-match. First-time registration adds 10–15 minutes. RIX has self-service kiosks at the non-Schengen entry to speed it up.

ETIAS — Coming Q4 2026

The €7 pre-travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationals (UK, US, Canada, Australia, etc.) launches autumn 2026 with a phased grace period. Not required yet at writing; verify before departure. EU/EEA citizens are unaffected.

Security: 3D CT Lanes

RIX upgraded to 3D CT scanners on most lanes in 2024 — laptops and liquids stay in the bag in the new lanes (verify signage). Belts and shoes generally stay on. Wait time is short — typically 5–12 minutes, even at peak. The airport’s scale keeps queues moving.

⭐ Bus 22 — The €1.81 Default

Rīgas satiksme bus 22 runs from the bus stop in P1 car park (between arrival exits E and C) to Abrenes iela in Riga via Stockmann department store and the Old Town. Journey time ~25 minutes. Frequency every 10–20 minutes during the day. Pay the driver with a contactless card or buy a ticket from the kiosk inside the terminal.

🚖 Taxi — Cheap, but Pick the Licensed Rank

Taxis are genuinely affordable in Riga compared to Western Europe. The official rank is at the kerb outside arrivals. Use the licensed-yellow rank, not greeters inside the terminal — the latter charge 2–3× the fair fare.

📱 Bolt — The Latvian-Estonian Default

Bolt is the dominant rideshare in Latvia (the Estonian-founded app). Uber operates but is much smaller. Bolt fares typically 30–40% cheaper than metered taxi for the same route. Pickup at the rideshare zone (signposted from arrivals).

✨ Primeclass Business Lounge (3rd floor near Gate B1, Schengen side)

If you eat once at RIX, eat the rupjmaize (dark Latvian rye bread) with smoked cheese at Lido Restaurant in the central concourse — €8–12 for a Latvian set. Add karbonāde (pork cutlet) for the full local plate. Latvia’s rye bread is genuinely distinctive; you won’t find this density and caraway depth at Frankfurt or Vienna airport food courts.

The Riga Black Balsam bar at the Primeclass Lounge and the duty-free shop at RIX both stock the iconic 45% herbal-bitter Latvian liqueur. The original Black Balsam (1752 recipe) and the newer Black Balsam Currant (with blackcurrant) are both available. Take one home as the definitive Latvian souvenir — €15–22 for the 700 ml bottle airside, vs €25+ at most Western European duty-free that stocks it.

The take-home picks: Baltic amber jewellery (the Baltic coast is the world’s amber capital — pendants from €15, but verify authenticity stamp), Latvian linen (kitchen towels, table runners — distinctive flax weaves), Laima chocolate (the Latvian chocolate brand since 1870), Adazi pumpkin seed bread, and blackcurrant jam. Avoid airport-priced amber — Old Town shops at Doma laukums are 25%+ cheaper. Buy chocolate and Black Balsam at the airport, jewellery in town.

airBaltic is unique in Europe for operating an all-Airbus A220 fleet (a smaller-aircraft hub-and-spoke model). The carrier flies to ~70 destinations across Europe and the Middle East, with Riga as the only major hub. Russia airspace closure since Feb 2022 affected airBaltic too, especially the Tashkent and Tbilisi routes that took longer reroutes. The airline’s 2026 strength is intra-EU short-haul — they’re not a long-haul player.

The Rail Baltica high-speed line from Tallinn through Riga to Vilnius and onward to Warsaw is under construction. The RIX station building completes in 2026, but actual high-speed train service through Latvia isn’t scheduled until 2030+. The bus connection remains the only real choice. Don’t plan around Rail Baltica for 2026 or 2027 travel — the rail line itself is years away.

Riga is only slightly south of Helsinki. December–January daylight: ~7 hours (sunrise 09:00, sunset 16:00). Summer June–July: 17+ hours. Pre-sunrise winter departures (06:00) feel psychologically dark — the airport is well-lit but jetlag amplifies. The Primeclass Lounge sleeping suites are useful.

Riga municipal water is safe to drink — meets EU standards, drinkable everywhere including RIX washroom taps. Free refill stations exist airside. Bottled water at the kiosks runs €2.50 for 500 ml; refill, don’t buy. Some Latvians drink only filtered water by preference, but the airport supply is unfiltered municipal and safe.

EU/EEA visitors: your home plan covers Latvia free under Roam Like At Home — do nothing. UK/US/non-EU visitors: the LMT, Bite, and Tele2 kiosks at arrivals sell tourist eSIMs for €10–20 / 30 days. Or buy on Airalo / Holafly for €5–10 less before landing. 5G coverage is universal across Riga.

Latvia consistently ranks among the safer European countries for solo female travellers. Riga’s Old Town is well-lit and police-monitored at night. For a 04:30 arrival, prefer Bolt over flagging a kerbside taxi — Bolt’s in-app tracking and metered fare are universal advantages. Hotels offer 24-hour reception. The city is small enough that 90% of tourists never go beyond the well-trafficked downtown.

Latvian VAT is 21%; non-EU residents can claim a refund on purchases over €50 from participating shops. The VAT Refund counter is in the non-Schengen departures area. Bring receipts and unused goods. Latvia is largely card-dominant in shops, restaurants and the airport — but small Old Town stalls and weekend markets sometimes prefer cash. Withdraw €30–50 in EUR for incidentals; ATMs at RIX are functional.
