Formentera is Ibiza’s smaller, quieter sister island — 30 minutes by ferry from Ibiza Town port (Trasmapi, Aquabus, Balearia operate). ~€25–40 single. Pristine beaches (Ses Illetes, Llevant, Migjorn), no clubs, lower density — the locals’ alternative for a 1–2 day reset from the Ibiza party scene. Rental car or e-bike on Formentera for full island exploration; the island is just 19 km long.

Ibiza Island Council’s rental-car cap dropped from 16,000 → 14,000 slots for summer 2026 (~12% YoY cut). Average rental ~€42/day (up from ~€23 in 2019). Pre-book online 30+ days ahead for any guaranteed availability; walk-up rentals are increasingly impractical. Balearic Parliament considering umbrella law to extend the rental cap to Mallorca + Menorca. For 1–2 day trips: organised bus tours or pre-booked transfers may be cheaper.

The Balearic ECOTAX (Sustainable Tourism Tax / ITS) remains €1–4/night accommodation in 2026, halved in winter (Nov–Mar). The proposed peak-season hike to €15/night was defeated in February 2026 — same coordinated outcome as Mallorca. Charged on hotels and licensed STR — NOT on flights. Visitor experience is largely unchanged; protests + political debate continue.
