Paris to Auckland with China Eastern Airlines from €890 — 19% below the typical deal price of €1100.
Tickets from €890 both ways — checked baggage included.
The outbound stop in Shanghai (PVG) is 17 hours 5 minutes — long enough to leave the airport and step into the city instead of pacing the terminal. China’s 144-hour transit visa-free policy covers most EU and US passports as long as you arrive on an international flight, leave on an international flight to a different country, and stay within Shanghai or the wider Yangtze River Delta region.
Best use of the time, in order:
- Shanghai Maglev from PVG to Longyang Road — 7 min at 300 km/h (or 430 km/h on certain afternoon services). ¥50 single, ¥40 with a same-day boarding pass.
- The Bund + Pudong skyline at sunset — 20 min by metro from Longyang Road. Free, postcard-iconic.
- Real Shanghainese food — Jia Jia Tang Bao or Din Tai Fung for xiaolongbao, Yang’s Fry Dumplings for shengjianbao.
- Yu Garden + Old City if it’s daytime, Xintiandi or French Concession if evening.
Allow 90 minutes each way for PVG immigration + Maglev/metro. With a 17-hour layover that still leaves ~12 hours in the city. The return-leg layover (7h 25m) is tight — better to stay airside or use the airport transit area.
