🌍 About Malabo
Malabo sits on Bioko, a volcanic island in the Gulf of Guinea that's geographically part of Cameroon's coast but politically Equatorial Guinea — the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa, so the city mixes colonial Spanish architecture with oil-money towers. The island itself is the real draw: Pico Basílé, a 3,011m volcano you can drive up for views of Cameroon on clear days, and rainforest that's one of West Africa's best primate habitats (drill monkeys, several endemic species). Tour Finca Sampaka, a cacao plantation running since around 1906, and follow the bean to chocolate. Eat pepesup, the spicy local fish soup. Come December to February — the dry season, when Bioko's relentless rain eases and Pico Basílé is actually climbable. The rest of the year is among the wettest in Africa, so a cheap wet-season fare can mean washed-out days.
