🌍 About Longyearbyen

Longyearbyen is the world's northernmost town, on Svalbard at 78°N, and the only place where you legally need a rifle to leave the settlement — polar bears outnumber people on the archipelago, so guided trips carry one. It's also home to the Global Seed Vault, dug into permafrost to back up the world's crop seeds. Eat Svalbard reindeer — a small, stocky subspecies found only here; Huset and Mary-Ann's Polarrigg do it as stew or on a tasting menu. Come mid-April to late August for the midnight sun, with peak polar-bear and hiking conditions May–September. The polar night runs roughly 11 November to 30 January — no sun at all, just blue twilight — cheaper and eerily quiet, but only worth it if total darkness is the point.
