Turkish Airlines Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin, Checked & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-05-31

Turkish Airlines’ baggage allowance in 2026 depends on three things: your fare bundle (EcoFly, ExtraFly or PrimeFly in Economy), whether your route runs on the weight concept or the piece concept, and your cabin. The cabin-bag rule is the one constant — every passenger gets one carry-on of up to 8 kg and 55 x 40 x 23 cm, plus a small personal item — but checked baggage varies enormously, and the cheapest EcoFly fares now include no free checked bag at all on international routes.

This guide sets out the current published figures, the fare-bundle breakdown, how fees work (and why they’re quoted by route, not as one flat number), and the rules for sports gear and instruments. Where a number genuinely changes by route or region, we say so rather than pretending there’s a single answer.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

Here’s the gap between the policy page and what actually lands on the cheapest fare. Turkish’s published rule says EcoFly international includes zero free checked baggage — and on short-haul (e.g. Istanbul to nearby Europe or the Caucasus), that’s exactly right: the cheapest EcoFly ticket is genuinely hand baggage only, 8 kg cabin and nothing in the hold.

But on long-haul, the cheapest fares we see priced on deals don’t behave like a stripped EcoFly. At deal prices on Turkish’s intercontinental routes, the entry-level economy ticket typically arrives with a cabin allowance of 8 kg plus 1 x 20 kg checked bag included — the long-haul fare floor sits a bundle above the bare hand-luggage product. So the practical takeaway: on a cheap Turkish short-haul, budget for a paid bag or pack hand-luggage-only; on a cheap Turkish long-haul, you usually already have a checked bag, but always confirm the bag icon at booking, because the EcoFly label alone doesn’t tell you which.

Oversize, sports & special items

Weight concept vs piece concept. Most Turkish Airlines international routes use the weight concept — your total checked weight matters, and standard Economy is up to 30 kg (Business 40 kg), reduced or removed on EcoFly. Routes to and from the Americas and certain African destinations use the piece concept: a set number of bags (typically 1 x 23 kg on ExtraFly, 2 x 23 kg on PrimeFly; Business 2 x 32 kg). No single bag may exceed 32 kg under either system.

Oversize / overweight. Bags between 23 and 32 kg, or exceeding the standard size, are accepted for an extra-weight or oversize fee but are still capped at 32 kg per piece for handler safety. Beyond that you must split the load.

Sports equipment. Carried as checked baggage only and charged per the Sports Equipment Fee Schedule (separate from normal excess baggage — you can’t buy it as ordinary extra allowance). The first set of golf or ski equipment is generally carried free; bikes, surfboards, diving gear and similar are charged by weight/size.

Musical instruments. Small instruments count within your normal cabin or checked allowance. Larger ones (e.g. cellos) can travel on a purchased extra seat — booked at a sales office at least 48 hours before departure, with an instrument size up to 140 x 42 x 25 cm and weight up to 75 kg in the seat. Turkish disclaims liability for instrument damage.

2026 note. The EU’s proposed standard guaranteeing a free under-seat personal item plus a cabin bag is still being negotiated, not law, and the European Commission has signalled it won’t force size harmonisation. As a non-EU carrier, Turkish Airlines isn’t bound by it on non-EU routes; its 8 kg / 55 x 40 x 23 cm cabin rule and 4 kg personal item already meet the substance of the proposal.

Frequently asked questions

What is Turkish Airlines' cabin baggage allowance in 2026?

One cabin bag up to 8 kg and 55 x 40 x 23 cm, plus a personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm and 4 kg, in Economy. Business passengers get two cabin pieces (16 kg total) plus a personal item.

Does the cheapest EcoFly fare include a checked bag?

On international routes, no — EcoFly includes no free checked bag and you must buy one. On domestic Turkish flights EcoFly includes 15 kg. In practice, the cheapest long-haul Turkish economy fares we see at deal prices tend to include 1 x 20 kg checked, but short-haul EcoFly is hand-luggage only, so always check the bag icon before paying.

How much checked baggage do I get in Economy?

It depends on the route and bundle. On weight-concept routes, standard Economy is up to 30 kg (ExtraFly/PrimeFly). On piece-concept routes (Americas, some African destinations), ExtraFly gives 1 x 23 kg and PrimeFly 2 x 23 kg. No single bag may exceed 32 kg.

What's the difference between EcoFly, ExtraFly and PrimeFly?

They are Economy fare bundles. EcoFly is cheapest with the least baggage and strictest change rules; ExtraFly adds a checked bag and more flexibility; PrimeFly is the most generous on baggage and the most flexible to change or refund.

How much does an extra or excess bag cost on Turkish Airlines?

There's no single price — fees are set by route and region. Weight-concept excess runs roughly €8-32 per kg (often sold in 5 kg blocks), and piece-concept extra bags can run from around $165 up to $290 depending on the region of departure. GBP prices vary by route; Turkish quotes the exact amount in your local currency, so use the official baggage calculator for your specific flight.

What is the maximum weight for a single checked bag?

32 kg per piece, on every fare and both the weight and piece systems. A bag over 32 kg won't be accepted as a single item — you must redistribute the contents across more pieces.

Can I bring sports equipment or a musical instrument?

Yes. Sports equipment travels as checked baggage and is charged per Turkish's Sports Equipment Fee Schedule; the first set of golf or ski gear is generally free. Small instruments fit within your normal allowance, while large ones (like a cello) can travel on a purchased extra seat booked at least 48 hours ahead.

Do the new EU free hand-luggage rules apply to Turkish Airlines?

The EU standard guaranteeing a free personal item plus cabin bag is still a proposal under negotiation, not law, and the Commission has said it won't force a single size. As a non-EU carrier, Turkish isn't bound by it on non-EU routes — but its existing 8 kg cabin bag plus 4 kg personal item already match the spirit of it.
