Cathay Pacific Baggage Allowance 2026: Carry-On, Checked Bags & Fees

✓ Policy verified 2026-07-17 — official pages + live fare checks

Cathay Pacific’s baggage rule in 2026 is simpler than most airlines’: you will almost always get a checked bag — 1 × 23 kg is included even on the cheapest Economy Light fare, and Essential, Flex and most US–Canada fares carry 2 × 23 kg. The one exception worth knowing about: some deeply discounted intra-Asia short- and mid-haul sale fares exclude the bag — on those, the booking flow shows it clearly before you pay. Cathay retired its old weight-based system (a combined-kg pool) in 2023 and is fully piece-based on every route today; if another site quotes you a “20–30 kg allowance pool”, it is describing an airline that no longer exists.

Cabin baggage is uniform on every route: one piece up to 7 kg in Economy and Premium Economy (10 kg Business, 15 kg First), plus a small personal item. The full 2026 breakdown follows, with the fare-class detail that matters most when you book a cheap deal fare.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What you actually get on a cheap Cathay deal fare: more than you’d expect. The carry-on (1 piece, 7 kg) and a personal item are always included — and unlike most airlines’ bare-bones tiers, Cathay’s Economy Light keeps the 1 × 23 kg checked bag even at deal prices on long-haul routes. The cheap Cathay fares we publish from Europe, North America and Australia come with the bag in the price. The only fares to double-check are deeply discounted intra-Asia short- and mid-haul sales, where the bag can be stripped — the booking flow states it plainly on those.

If you do need to add a bag, it’s expensive after the fact — roughly US$100–200 per piece on most routes and US$200–260 to/from the Americas. Buying online at least 24 hours before departure saves up to 10% versus the airport rate; on an intra-Asia sale fare, compare Light-plus-paid-bag against the Essential fare (which bundles two bags) before you commit.

Oversize, sports & special items

The piece system: every Cathay route works the same way — a fixed number of bags, each capped at 23 kg in Economy and Premium Economy, 32 kg in Business and First. Splitting weight across your included pieces is free; a single bag over its cap is not. (Cathay ran a combined-weight pool on many routes until 2023; that system is gone, whatever older guides say.)

Oversize and overweight: Any bag over 32kg will not be accepted as normal checked baggage and must be shipped as cargo. Bags between the standard limit and 158cm/203cm incur oversize charges; check the baggage calculator for your route.

Sports and musical equipment: Items like golf clubs, skis, bicycles and surfboards count toward your allowance (or as an extra piece if over) and may carry handling fees; bicycles and some sports gear must be packed appropriately. Musical instruments too large for the cabin can be carried as checked baggage within size limits, or you can buy an extra cabin seat for fragile instruments.

Asia Miles / Marco Polo Club members receive additional checked allowance on top of the fare allowance — an extra piece at higher tiers. Always use Cathay’s baggage calculator for the definitive figure on your exact route, fare and tier.

Baggage by region & route

Cathay Pacific is fully piece-based. The cheapest Economy Light fare gives one piece on almost every route; higher fares and US/Canada routes give two.

Region / route Cheapest economy checked allowance System
Worldwide — Economy Light 1 × 23 kg Piece
USA / Canada & Economy Essential/Flex up to 2 × 23 kg Piece
Australia / NZ / Europe (Light) 1 × 23 kg Piece
Intra-Asia short/mid-haul — discounted sale fares ⚠️ can be carry-on only — check the fare details Piece

✈️ oneworld: Emerald/Sapphire members get +1 checked piece free — handy if you’re on the 1-piece Economy Light fare.

Fare class drives the piece count more than region — confirm on your e-ticket. Allowances are for the cheapest bookable economy fare, verified July 2026; always confirm on your e-ticket as fares and routes change.

Frequently asked questions

Does Cathay Pacific's cheapest Light fare include a checked bag?

Almost always, yes. Economy Light includes one 23 kg checked bag on nearly every route — including the cheap long-haul deal fares we publish. The exception: some deeply discounted intra-Asia short- and mid-haul sale fares strip the bag, and the booking flow shows that clearly before you pay. Essential and Flex include two 23 kg pieces.

How much does Cathay Pacific carry-on baggage weigh and measure?

One carry-on piece up to 7kg in Economy and Premium Economy, 10kg in Business and 15kg in First. The size limit is 56 x 36 x 23 cm for all cabins. You also get one small personal item (handbag, laptop bag, small backpack or camera bag).

What is Cathay Pacific's checked baggage weight limit?

No single checked bag may exceed 32kg or 158cm / 62in in total dimensions (203cm for premium cabins). Anything heavier than 32kg must travel as cargo. The free allowance itself is piece-based: 1 × 23 kg on Economy Light, 2 × 23 kg on Essential/Flex and Premium Economy, 2 × 32 kg in Business, 3 × 32 kg in First.

How much does an extra checked bag cost on Cathay Pacific?

Roughly US$100–200 per extra piece on most routes, and about US$200–260 per piece to and from the Americas. Exact fees vary by route and are shown in Cathay's baggage calculator. Pre-purchasing online at least 24 hours before departure earns up to 10% off the airport rate.

What's the difference between the weight concept and piece concept?

For Cathay it no longer matters: the airline retired the weight concept in 2023, and every route is now piece-based — a fixed number of bags, each up to 23 kg in Economy/PE and 32 kg in Business/First. If a site quotes a combined-kg pool for Cathay, it is out of date. (For history: the weight system pooled kilograms across all your bags; the piece system counts bags instead.)

What do Economy Essential and Flex fares add over Light?

A second 23 kg checked bag (2 × 23 kg total), plus free standard seat selection; Flex adds free changes and the most generous terms on top. Since Light already includes one bag on nearly every route, upgrade for the second bag or the flexibility — not out of fear of flying bagless.

Can I bring sports equipment or a musical instrument on Cathay Pacific?

Yes. Sports gear like golf clubs, skis, bicycles and surfboards counts toward your checked allowance (or as an extra piece if over) and may carry handling fees and packing requirements. Small instruments fit as carry-on; larger ones go as checked baggage within size limits, or you can buy an extra cabin seat for fragile instruments.
