🏢 Terminal & The Airport’s Two Jobs

Kayseri Erkilet does two things: it serves a large city with its own demand, and it catches Cappadocia overflow. This is why it draws more flights than Nevşehir Kapadokya (NAV) — it doesn’t depend on tourist season alone. Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and SunExpress fly the schedule, overwhelmingly domestic (Istanbul, İzmir, the coast) with some seasonal international charters.

The decisive fact is the split distance. The city centre is 6 km out. Göreme and the volcanic valleys of Cappadocia are 70–80 km west. Which destination you are heading to changes the airport’s character entirely.

🛂 Border & Visa

Turkey operates its own entry system, separate from Schengen.

Entry is through Turkish passport control. Since February 2026, US citizens join EU/Schengen and UK passport holders in entering visa-free for tourism stays up to 90 days in any 180-day window.

Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, Austrians and a number of other nationalities require an e-Visa, bought before travel at evisa.gov.tr for around US$50. The airport visa-on-arrival windows are closed; the visa record is digital and there is no sticker. Passport validity of six months or more is required.

The currency is the Turkish lira (₺ / TRY). High inflation is the ongoing condition here; quote and pay in lira, and check the current rate before you arrive. Cards work well in the city and at the airport.

The airport’s proximity to the city makes the options here genuinely useful rather than a compromise.

🚍 Municipal Buses

City buses on lines 100, 101 and 271 connect the terminal to the city centre for under ₺6.6, paid with a Kayserikart transit card. Journey time is 15–20 minutes.

🚃 Kayseray Tram

A station of the Kayseray light-rail tram sits near the terminal. If your accommodation is near the tram line, this is the most direct option — no transfer from a bus terminal.

🚐 Havaş Shuttle

The Havaş airport shuttle runs on flight timing and costs around ₺12. Useful if you want a seat rather than a standing bus and are not travelling at peak hours.

🗺️ Getting to Cappadocia from ASR

This is the part worth thinking through. Göreme and the rock valleys are 70–80 km from ASR, reached by shuttle or private transfer. The same operators that serve Nevşehir run from Kayseri, but the leg is longer and pricier than from NAV.

🛋️ Lounges

Kayseri Erkilet has the standard airport facilities: free Wi-Fi, cafés, international duty-free, prayer rooms. It does not have a confirmed Priority Pass lounge. Turkey’s network lounges are concentrated at Istanbul Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen. There may be a pay-in CIP lounge for domestic or international departures, but this is unconfirmed — do not rely on Priority Pass access here and plan for the general gate area.

🍽️ Food Before You Fly

Kayseri is a serious food city and the place to eat two specific things before a flight.

Pastırma — air-dried beef cured under a thick crust of ground cumin, fenugreek, garlic and paprika — is produced in Kayseri and exported across Turkey. It is the real product from this region, not a generic thing you can get anywhere.

Kayseri mantı — tiny hand-folded dumplings, served under garlic yoghurt — is considered among Turkey’s best. The city’s own name is attached to this version specifically; other cities make mantı, but Kayseri mantı is a denomination.

Sucuk, the spiced beef sausage, is the third Kayseri export worth eating. For the carry-home, vacuum-packed pastırma or sucuk from a city butcher travels well.

Tipping around 5–10% is standard. Pay in lira; all prices are lira-denominated.

💡 Insider: Kayseri, Erciyes & the Layover Math

Kayseri has things worth seeing that have nothing to do with Cappadocia. The city centre holds a black-stone Seljuk citadel, the historic Kapalı Çarşı (covered bazaar) and a cluster of 13th-century Seljuk monuments. This is a city that was once the Seljuk capital; the stonework shows it.

Behind the city rises Mount Erciyes, a 3,900-metre dormant volcano with the Erciyes ski resort on its flanks, about 25 km from the airport. This is Turkey’s main developing winter-sports destination.

The layover math is worth doing honestly:

• The city centre is 15–20 minutes out. A 3–4 hour layover can cover the Seljuk citadel, the covered bazaar and a pastırma lunch by bus, tram or Havaş shuttle, with enough return-and-security buffer to not be nervous at the gate.
• Erciyes ski resort is 25 km out, a different direction, and needs five hours or more for it to be worth the journey.
• Cappadocia is not a layover destination from here. At 70–80 km each way before you see any valleys, it requires an overnight.
• Under three hours, stay airside.

• City transport (bus/tram/Havaş, 15–20 min, ~₺6.6–₺12) is the easy move for Kayseri; the 70–80 km to Cappadocia is a proper transfer, longer than from Nevşehir.
• US, UK and EU citizens are visa-free; Canadians, Australians and others need an e-Visa arranged before travel at evisa.gov.tr. US visa-free status applies from February 2026.
• Pay in lira. Cards work in the city and at the airport; check the current rate given ongoing inflation.
