🏢 1. The Terminal & the Island Named for a Singer

The airport was renamed Cesária Évora Airport in March 2012, a few months after the state funeral of the morna singer known worldwide as “the barefoot diva,” who was born in Mindelo in 1941 and died in 2011. It is Cape Verde’s fourth-busiest airport, with a modern terminal of around 11,000 square metres built to process several hundred passengers an hour, handling international and inter-island flights from a single building. The route map leans toward Europe and Portugal rather than charter beach traffic: TAP Air Portugal to Lisbon, Cabo Verde Airlines, and seasonal European links — TUIfly Netherlands, easyJet, Transavia — to Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and beyond. Inter-island connections moved to a new operator in 2026 (see the border section). The scale is modest and the mood is a city airport, not a resort gateway.

🛂 2. The Cape Verde Border: EASE, the Security Tax & the 2026 Visa Change

São Vicente uses Cape Verde’s national entry system, and the important step happens online before departure.

• EASE pre-registration is mandatory. Complete the traveller entry form on the official EASE platform at least five days before arrival and pay the Airport Security Tax (TSA) — about 3,400 CVE (€31) for a stay up to 30 days — at the same time. The authorisation comes back by email (allow up to 72 hours) and is valid for a year.
• No proof, double the tax. From 1 July 2026, travellers who cannot show proof of pre-registration pay twice the TSA at the border. Do it before you fly.
• The 2026 visa change. 61 nationalities, including the EU and the UK, remain visa-free for up to 30 days (EASE still required). Since 1 January 2026, 96 nationalities can no longer get a visa on arrival and must obtain one before boarding, online via EASE or at a consulate. Confirm whether your passport is affected well ahead.
• Carry a passport valid for your stay, your EASE confirmation and proof of onward travel.

The currency is the Cape Verdean escudo (CVE), fixed to the euro at roughly 110 to one.

🚐 3. Getting to Mindelo

Mindelo is about 5 km from the terminal, around the bay from São Pedro.

• Taxi is the quick option: roughly 1,100 CVE (€10) for the 15–20 minute run into town. Taxis wait outside arrivals; agree the fare before you go.
• Aluguer — the shared minibus — works the São Pedro–Mindelo road roughly every 30 minutes in daylight and costs about 120 CVE (€1). It is the genuine local option: cheap, frequent enough, slower, and fine if you are not weighed down with bags.
• There is no rail, and the island is small enough that a hire car is only worth it if you mean to drive up Monte Verde or out to the coast.

There is no confirmed airport lounge at Cesária Évora Airport — do not plan around lounge access here. The terminal is modern and comfortable for its size, with seating, a café and shops, but the waiting is done in the general concourse. If you have a long gap before an international departure, Mindelo itself is the better place to spend it, a short taxi away, rather than the airport.

The escudo is fixed to the euro, so the rate never moves, and euros are accepted across Mindelo’s bars, restaurants and shops, with change given in escudos. Cards work in the larger places; carry cash for the music bars and markets, where you will want it. Skip the airport bureau’s poor spread and pay in euros or draw escudos from an ATM in town.

What to carry home from here is less about duty-free and more about music and drink: grogue and ponche, the sugar-cane spirit and its liqueur; Cape Verdean coffee; and, fittingly for Mindelo, recordings of morna and the faster coladeira — the town is the place to buy them from someone who plays.

Mindelo is the reason to come, and its currency is music. The town is the cradle of morna, the melancholic Cape Verdean song form now recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, and the home of Cesária Évora, who carried it to the world. Its calendar turns on two events: the Mindelo Carnival each February, a Rio-inspired parade that is the biggest in the country, and the Baía das Gatas festival on the August full-moon weekend, a beach music festival running since 1984 — Cesária Évora headlined the first edition. Beyond the music, Mindelo is a handsome colonial port wrapped around Porto Grande bay, shaped by its years as a transatlantic coaling station, with Monte Verde rising behind the town. The layover math: Mindelo is a 15–20 minute taxi or a €1 minibus from the terminal, which makes it genuinely reachable on a long stop — a half-day is enough to walk the waterfront, eat, and hear live music in a bar if your timing lands in the evening. But the island rewards an overnight: the music is a night activity, and Carnival or the Baía das Gatas weekend are whole-trip occasions, not stopovers. If you are connecting with hours to kill, go into Mindelo; if you are coming for the festivals, plan to stay.
