🏛️ The Airport & the Woman it’s Named After

The terminal was renamed Cesária Évora Airport in March 2012, a few months after the state funeral of the singer born in Mindelo in 1941 — “the barefoot diva,” who performed without shoes as a statement, and who spent decades singing morna in local bars before a French producer recorded her at 47 and she spent the rest of her life filling concert halls worldwide. She died in 2011. The name on the terminal is not decorative; it locates you in a specific kind of place.

VXE is Cape Verde’s fourth-busiest airport, with a modern terminal of around 11,000 square metres handling international and inter-island flights from a single building. The route map skews toward Europe and Portugal rather than charter beach traffic: TAP Air Portugal to Lisbon, Cabo Verde Airlines, and seasonal European links — TUIfly Netherlands, easyJet, Transavia — to Amsterdam, Paris, and Brussels. Inter-island connections moved to CVsky in 2026.

The terminal is adequate, modern, and not especially interesting. VXE’s one real advantage over the beach-resort airports is what happens when you leave it.

📋 EASE Pre-Registration

EASE is mandatory for everyone entering Cape Verde. Complete the traveller entry form on the official EASE platform at least five days before arrival and pay the Airport Security Tax (TSA) — about 3,400 CVE (€31) for a stay up to 30 days — at the same time. The authorisation arrives by email within about 72 hours and is valid for a year. This is not a formality you can leave for the airport queue.

🛃 Visas

61 nationalities — including all EU and UK passports — are visa-free for up to 30 days. EASE pre-registration and the TSA are still required regardless.

Since 1 January 2026, 96 other nationalities can no longer obtain a visa on arrival. They must obtain one before boarding, either online via EASE or at a Cape Verde consulate. Check whether your passport falls into this group well ahead of travel.

Carry your passport (valid for the duration of your stay), the EASE authorisation email, and proof of onward travel.

🚐 Getting to Mindelo

Mindelo is about 5 km from the terminal, around the bay from São Pedro — a short ride that costs either next to nothing or almost nothing, depending on how patient you are.

There is no rail link. A hire car makes sense only if you intend to drive up Monte Verde or out to the coast — for Mindelo itself, the taxi or aluguer covers it entirely.

🛋️ Lounges

Cesária Évora Airport has no confirmed lounge of any kind. No Priority Pass outlet, no contract lounge. The terminal has seating, a café, and shops, but the waiting happens in the general concourse. If you have a long gap before an international departure, Mindelo is the better place to spend it: a taxi there and back costs around €20 and takes 30–40 minutes in total, which leaves real time in town even on a two-hour stop.

💵 Money & What to Spend it On

The Cape Verdean escudo (CVE) is fixed to the euro at roughly 110 to one — the rate does not move, which means there is no reason to panic-exchange at the terminal.

Euros are accepted across Mindelo’s bars, restaurants, and shops, with change given in escudos. Cards work in the larger places. Carry cash for music bars and markets, where you will want it and cards are often not taken.

What to bring home is less about duty-free and more about what Mindelo actually produces. Grogue and ponche — the local sugar-cane spirit and its liqueur — are worth buying from a shop in town rather than the terminal. Cape Verdean coffee. And, fittingly, recordings of morna and the faster coladeira: buy them in Mindelo from someone who plays.

Mindelo’s claim on your time rests on two things: the music and the Carnival.

Morna — the melancholic Cape Verdean song form now listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage — was largely shaped here, in the bars and back streets of a colonial port town built on transatlantic coaling traffic. Cesária Évora grew up in these streets, spent years singing in those bars for little money, and eventually carried the form to concert halls across Europe. The airport name is not nostalgia; it tells you exactly where you are.

The calendar has two fixed points. Carnival in February is the biggest in Cape Verde — a Rio-influenced street parade that takes over Mindelo for days. The Baía das Gatas festival runs on the August full-moon weekend, a beach music event that has been going since 1984; Cesária Évora headlined the first edition. Neither is a minor local event. Both are reasons to plan a trip around, not things you catch on a layover.

Beyond the music, Mindelo is a handsome working port wrapped around Porto Grande bay, with Monte Verde rising behind the town. It is not Sal or Boa Vista. There is no resort strip, no package-holiday infrastructure. That is the point.

The layover math, honestly: Mindelo is 15–20 minutes from the terminal by taxi and €1 by aluguer, which makes it genuinely reachable on a long stop. A half-day covers the Porto Grande waterfront, a meal, and live music if your timing lands in the evening. The round trip is 30–40 minutes of transit, so a two-hour stop is marginal; three hours or more gives you real time in town.

The island rewards an overnight. The music is a night activity. Carnival and Baía das Gatas are whole-trip occasions. If you are connecting with hours to kill, Mindelo is worth the taxi. If you are coming for the festivals, do not shortchange it with a single night.

• Complete EASE and pay the TSA at least five days before flying — from 1 July 2026, arriving without proof means double the tax at the border.
• Check whether your passport is among the 96 nationalities now required to obtain a visa before boarding; on-arrival visas ended on 1 January 2026.
• Agree the taxi fare to Mindelo before you get in (~1,100 CVE / €10); the aluguer minibus is roughly every 30 minutes in daylight for ~120 CVE (€1).
• Pay in euros or draw escudos from an ATM in town — the airport bureau’s spread is not competitive on a euro-pegged currency.
• There is no lounge at VXE. A long wait is better spent in Mindelo than in the concourse.
