🌍 About Bastia

Most people skip Bastia for Calvi or Bonifacio, which is exactly why it's worth a day — this is working, lived-in Corsica, not a postcard. The old town, Terra Vecchia, is a tangle of tall shuttered streets behind the Vieux Port, with a morning market on Place du Marché and Saint-Jean-Baptiste, the island's largest baroque church. Above it the Genoese citadel, Terra Nova, looks down on the harbour. Eat figatellu, the smoky Corsican liver sausage, and moules à la bastiaise; finish with fiadone, a lemon-and-brocciu cheesecake. Bastia is also the natural starting point for the drive around Cap Corse, the wild peninsula to the north. Come in May–June or September — warm, swimmable, and far calmer than August, when the heat and the crowds peak.
