Osaka is Japan’s warm, food-obsessed second city and the gateway to Kyoto, Nara and the Kansai region. There is no non-stop flight from Stockholm, and since the closure of Russian airspace all Europe–Japan flying takes a longer southerly route, so every itinerary connects once through a hub. Finnair via Helsinki is the natural short-connection option and the quickest we measured; on price, though, it is China Eastern via Shanghai that leads by a clear margin. This guide covers who flies the route, a fair return fare in kronor, and when to book.
Route: Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) → Osaka Kansai International (KIX)
Distance: approximately 8,100 km (5,030 miles) — longer in the air now that flights route south of Russia
Non-stop flight time: no non-stop service — in the fares we priced, one-stop itineraries ran 14h 35m to 15h 40m in total, median about 15h 20m
Direct flights: No — there is no direct flight from Stockholm to Osaka. China Eastern via Shanghai held 60 of the hundred cheapest fares we priced and the lowest of all at 7,215 kr; Finnair via Helsinki was the quickest at about 14h 35m. Qatar Airways (via Doha) and Air China (via Beijing or Shanghai) also appeared.
Fares from Stockholm to Osaka (SEK)
Japan’s fares follow its famous seasons. Cherry-blossom time (late March–April), Golden Week (end of April–early May) and the autumn foliage (October–November) are the busiest and most expensive; deep winter and the June rainy season are the cheapest. The figures below are typical economy return fares in kronor, all one-stop.
| Month | Demand |
|---|---|
| January | low-medium |
| February | low-medium |
| March | high (blossom) |
| April | very high (blossom) |
| May | medium-high (Golden Week) |
| June | low (rainy season) |
| July | medium (summer holidays) |
| August | medium-high |
| September | medium |
| October | high (autumn) |
| November | high (autumn) |
| December | medium-high |
Reference points from our own deal tracking: nothing sold below 7 215 kr in the dates we could price, a strong return lands around 7 200–8 400 kr, a typical fair price is roughly 8 700 kr, and anything under about 8 400 kr is worth booking quickly. Airlines on this route
There is no non-stop flight. Since Russian airspace closed, Europe–Japan services fly a longer southerly path over Central Asia, which adds a couple of hours to every routing — but the connections themselves remain straightforward.
One-stop (the only option, 14h 35m to 15h 40m total in our sample):
- China Eastern via Shanghai Pudong — 60 of the hundred cheapest fares we priced, from 7,215 kr return, at a consistent 15h 20m total. The cheapest way to Kansai in our sample by a clear margin.
- Finnair via Helsinki — the natural choice from Stockholm: a short first hop and a large Japan schedule, with Osaka among its rebuilt Asian routes. The quickest total journey we measured, about 14h 35m, from 8,397 kr.
- Air China via Beijing or Shanghai — a third mainland-China routing, 8,568 kr and up.
- Qatar Airways via Doha — a comfortable Gulf routing with a well-timed connection to Kansai, from about 8,664 kr. In our sample it usually appeared as the return half of an itinerary that flew out through Shanghai.
- Emirates via Dubai and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul — both fly to Kansai and both have large Arlanda schedules, but neither turned up among the hundred cheapest fares we priced, so check them against the Chinese carriers rather than assuming they lead on price.
SAS does not serve Osaka directly; other European carriers such as KLM (via Amsterdam) and Lufthansa (via Frankfurt or Munich) also offer one-stop routings. For the shortest overall journey the Helsinki connection usually wins; for the lowest price, compare the Gulf and Turkish hubs.
When to book & how to save
- Book 3–5 months ahead for cherry-blossom season and the autumn foliage — these sell out early and are the priciest weeks of the year.
- Travel in winter (January–February) or June for the lowest fares; Kansai is quieter and cheaper, and the winter light is lovely in Kyoto.
- Avoid Golden Week (late April–early May), when Japan itself travels and both flights and hotels spike.
- Compare hubs: Helsinki, Doha, Dubai and Istanbul trade the cheapest fare between them — check all four.
- Watch the baggage: full-service carriers usually include 23–30 kg to Japan, but the cheapest fares may not — compare the all-in price.
Arriving in Osaka
Flights land at Kansai International Airport (KIX), built on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, about 50 km from the city centre. The fastest way in is the JR Haruka express to Shin-Osaka and Kyoto (about 50 minutes to central Osaka, roughly 250–300 kr), or the Nankai Rap:t to Namba in around 40 minutes. A shared airport limousine bus serves the main hotels, and a taxi to the centre is expensive by comparison. Note that Osaka’s older Itami (ITM) airport handles only domestic flights, so all your international traffic uses Kansai.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight from Stockholm to Osaka?
There is no non-stop flight. In the fares we priced, a one-stop itinerary took 14h 35m to 15h 40m in total including the connection, with a median near 15h 20m — a notably tight band for a long-haul route. Helsinki was the quickest of the hubs, Shanghai the cheapest. Journeys are longer than they once were because, with Russian airspace closed, Europe–Japan flights now route south over Central Asia.
Are there direct flights from Stockholm to Osaka?
No. No airline flies non-stop between Stockholm and Osaka. Every routing connects once through a hub. The cheapest fares we priced go through Shanghai with China Eastern, from 7,215 kr; the quickest is Helsinki with Finnair, about 14h 35m. Doha (Qatar Airways) and Beijing (Air China) are the other hubs that appeared.
How much does it cost to fly from Stockholm to Osaka?
In the dates we could price, returns ran 7 215–16 034 kr with the normal band about 8 400–9 100 kr and a median near 8 700 kr. The cheapest fares were China Eastern via Shanghai from 7 215 kr; cherry-blossom season and the autumn foliage sit toward the top of the range.
What is the cheapest month to fly from Stockholm to Osaka?
January, February and June are usually the cheapest. Our sample covers August to December, so it cannot price those months — but treat a figure below about 7 200 kr with suspicion, because nothing on the route sold under that in any month we could see. Winter is quiet and June is the rainy season, so both flights and hotels are cheaper. Avoid late March–April (blossom) and Golden Week, the most expensive periods.
Which airlines fly from Stockholm to Osaka?
All are one-stop. China Eastern via Shanghai dominated the fares we priced — 60 of the hundred cheapest, from 7,215 kr — with Air China via Beijing or Shanghai and Qatar Airways via Doha next. Finnair via Helsinki offers the shortest connection, about 14h 35m, and starts around 8,397 kr. Emirates (Dubai), Turkish Airlines (Istanbul), KLM (Amsterdam) and Lufthansa (Frankfurt/Munich) all serve Kansai too, but none appeared among the hundred cheapest fares.
Which airport do I fly into in Osaka?
You land at Kansai International Airport (KIX), on an island in Osaka Bay about 50 km from the centre. The JR Haruka express reaches central Osaka in around 50 minutes and continues to Kyoto. Osaka’s other airport, Itami (ITM), is domestic-only, so all international flights use Kansai.
How far in advance should I book Stockholm to Osaka flights?
Aim for 3 to 5 months ahead, and earlier still for cherry-blossom season and the autumn foliage, when Japan-bound demand pushes fares up well before departure. In the quieter winter months you can sometimes book closer in, but early booking usually wins.
Is it cheaper to fly on weekdays?
Often, yes — midweek departures (Tuesday to Thursday) are usually a little cheaper than a Friday–Sunday trip, and flying out and back on weekdays can save a few hundred kronor on a return. Being flexible by a day or two is one of the simplest ways to reduce the fare.
