Air Canada Baggage Allowance 2026: Cabin, Checked & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-06-20

Air Canada’s cheapest fare is Economy Basic, and it never includes a checked bag — not domestic, not transatlantic, not on the long-haul run to Tokyo, Sydney or São Paulo. What Basic gives you changes by region: on flights within Canada and to the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America it strips you down to a personal item only (no full-size carry-on), and since January 2025 you’ll pay a gate penalty if you show up with a roller. On long-haul international routes beyond North America, Basic is more humane — you keep one carry-on plus one personal item for the whole journey, you just still pay to check anything.

The first checked bag on Basic costs CA/US $45 within Canada and to the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean, and $75 on other international routes (each way), after Air Canada’s April 13, 2026 fee hike. If you actually need to check a bag, the cheapest way up is usually Economy Standard, which bundles one checked bag — but only on Canada-to-international routes beyond North America. On domestic, transborder and Caribbean flights, even Standard makes you pay. Read the fare name before you read the price.

Baggage by region & route

Checked-bag inclusion on the cheapest fare can depend on where you fly, not just the fare name. Here is what the lowest fare includes by route:

Route / region Cheapest fare (Economy Basic) includes
Within Canada / to U.S. No checked bag; carry-on also stripped (personal item only)
To Mexico / Caribbean / Central America No checked bag; carry-on also stripped (personal item only)
Transatlantic (to Europe) No checked bag; keeps carry-on + personal item

Fare Personal Cabin Checked
Economy Basic Yes Yes (no, on N. America/Carib) Paid only

What you actually get on a cheap fare

On a cheap Air Canada deal fare you are almost always looking at Economy Basic, and the honest summary is: no checked bag anywhere. The regional twist is the carry-on. Book Basic to Lisbon, Tokyo or Bogotá and you still get a full carry-on plus a personal item for free — only the checked bag costs extra. Book Basic to Vancouver, Cancún or Punta Cana and you’re down to one under-seat personal item; bring a roller and you’ll pay a gate fee on top.

Budget accordingly. If you can travel carry-on-only on a long-haul Basic ticket, the deal stays a deal. If you need to check a bag, add $45 each way ($90 round trip) on North American/Caribbean routes or $75 each way ($150 round trip) on other international routes — and compare that to the price gap up to Economy Standard, which folds in a checked bag on long-haul international flights and often costs less than paying the bag fee twice.

Oversize, sports & special items

Checked bags max out at 23 kg (50 lb) and 158 cm total linear dimensions; go to 23–32 kg or oversize and you pay a flat overweight/oversize penalty (roughly CA/US $100–$120 per bag, per direction). Sports equipment — skis, golf clubs, bikes — and musical instruments travel as checked baggage and count toward your allowance or fee; small instruments can be carried on if they fit the cabin limits, larger ones need a purchased seat. Strollers and mobility aids fly free.

The headline 2025/2026 change: from January 3, 2025 Air Canada enforces a gate penalty on Economy Basic passengers who bring a carry-on on routes where Basic only permits a personal item, and from April 13, 2026 the first and second checked-bag fees on domestic and transborder flights rose to CA/US $45 and $60 (from $35 and $50). International bag fees were left unchanged. Aeroplan Elite members, Star Alliance Gold members and eligible Aeroplan co-brand cardholders remain exempt from the first-bag fee.

Frequently asked questions

Does Air Canada's cheapest fare include a checked bag?

No. Economy Basic — the cheapest fare — never includes a free checked bag, on any route. You pay CA/US $45 each way within Canada and to the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean, or $75 each way on other international flights.

Can I bring a carry-on on Economy Basic?

It depends on the region. On long-haul international routes beyond North America (Europe, Asia, South America, etc.) Basic includes a full carry-on plus a personal item. On flights within Canada and to the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean and Central America, Basic gives you a personal item only — bring a roller and you’ll pay a gate fee.

Which Air Canada fare is the cheapest one with a checked bag?

Economy Standard, but only on Canada-to-international routes beyond North America — it bundles one checked bag there. On domestic, transborder and Caribbean flights, even Standard charges for bags; you’d need Economy Flex (1 bag) for a free checked bag on those routes.

How much does a checked bag cost on Air Canada in 2026?

From April 13, 2026, the first checked bag is CA/US $45 each way within Canada and to the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean (up from $35), or $75 each way on other international routes. The second bag is $60 domestic/transborder or $100 international.

What are Air Canada's carry-on size limits?

The standard carry-on must not exceed 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.5 x 15.5 x 9 in) and 10 kg. The personal item must fit 33 x 43 x 16 cm (13 x 17 x 6 in) and go under the seat in front of you.

What is Air Canada's checked baggage weight limit?

23 kg (50 lb) per bag, with a maximum of 158 cm (62 in) total linear dimensions. Bags between 23 and 32 kg, or over 158 cm, incur a flat overweight/oversize penalty of roughly CA/US $100–$120 per bag per direction.

Do Aeroplan members or Star Alliance Gold avoid bag fees?

Yes. Aeroplan Elite Status members, Star Alliance Gold members and eligible Aeroplan co-brand cardholders are exempt from the first checked-bag fee. Some cardholder exemptions are temporary — basic Aeroplan card exemptions run to November 30, 2026.

Can I add a bag after booking to save money?

Air Canada bag fees are the same whether you prepay online or pay at the airport, so there’s no online discount to chase. The real saving is choosing the right fare: if you need a bag, compare the cost of paying twice (round trip) against the upgrade to Economy Standard or Flex.
