SWISS Baggage Allowance 2026: Carry-On, Checked Bags & Fees

✓ Policy web-verified 2026-05-31

SWISS (Swiss International Air Lines) sells fares the same way its parent Lufthansa Group does: the price you see depends on whether a checked bag is bundled in. Every economy ticket includes one carry-on bag plus a personal item, but the cheapest fare — Economy Light — carries no checked bag at all. If you book a Light fare and need to check luggage, you pay separately, and that fee can quietly exceed the saving on the headline fare.

This guide covers SWISS’s current 2026 baggage rules: cabin and personal-item dimensions, the checked allowance by fare class on European versus intercontinental routes, exact weight and size limits, and what an extra or overweight bag actually costs. Where a figure changes by route or fare, it’s flagged.

What you actually get on a cheap fare

What SWISS includes at deal prices: the cheap fares that power most flight deals are Economy Light, which includes cabin baggage only — one carry-on up to 8 kg (55 x 40 x 23 cm) plus a personal item, but no checked bag.

If a deal headline looks great, budget for the checked-bag add-on before you book: roughly CHF/EUR/USD 73 each way within Europe and up to ~CHF/USD 230 each way on long-haul intercontinental routes when added online. Adding it at the airport costs more. On many longer routes, an Economy Classic fare (1 x 23 kg included) ends up cheaper overall than Light-plus-a-bag — compare the two before assuming the lowest fare wins.

Oversize, sports & special items

Weight and size limits. Economy checked bags are 23 kg each; business and first are 32 kg each. The maximum dimensions per piece are 158 cm (length + width + height). SWISS will not accept any single item over 32 kg or over 292 cm total — it must be shipped as cargo instead.

Extra-bag fees (online, per bag). First additional economy bag: about CHF/USD 64 within Switzerland, 73 across Europe, and 138 / 184 / 230 for short / medium / long-haul intercontinental. Booking through the Service Centre adds roughly CHF 5 per bag, and adding bags at the airport is more expensive — always prepay online.

Overweight and oversize. A bag over the weight limit (24-32 kg) costs around CHF 57 / EUR 50 in Europe and CHF 173 / USD 173 long-haul. An oversize bag (over 158 cm) costs about CHF 114 in Europe and up to CHF 346 long-haul.

Sports equipment. Ski and snowboard gear (in a proper bag, up to 200 cm) travels free as part of the checked allowance on all fares except Economy Light. Golf bags, surfboards and bicycles can also count toward your free allowance within weight limits; bicycles must be registered in advance via the Service Centre.

Musical instruments. Small instruments fitting carry-on dimensions (55 x 40 x 23 cm) go in the cabin. Larger instruments such as cellos or guitars require a separately booked extra seat if you want them in the cabin; otherwise they’re checked.

Fees and allowances vary by exact route and date — SWISS publishes a baggage calculator on swiss.com for the precise figure on your itinerary.
