With most airlines, checked baggage is a fare-bundle game. With Turkish Airlines it isn’t — the thing that actually decides your allowance is your route. Tell us where you’re flying and we can tell you what’s in the hold before you’ve even picked a fare: anything touching the Americas or Africa comes with two 23 kg bags, long-haul to Asia or the Middle East gives you around 30 kg, and short-haul around Europe gives you nothing free at all on the cheapest ticket. The fare bundle — EcoFly, ExtraFly, PrimeFly — mostly buys flexibility and seat perks, not extra bags at the bottom of the market.
So we’ve put the route first. The one real constant is the cabin: every passenger, on every fare, gets one 8 kg carry-on (55 x 40 x 23 cm) plus a small personal item. Everything below is laid out the way it actually matters — destination first, then the cabin rule, the fare bundles, fees, elite and infant extras, sports gear and instruments — with the real deal-price allowance called out, because the EcoFly label alone won’t tell you which system you’re on.

Weight concept vs piece concept — which applies to you
This is the single most important thing to get right, because it decides whether your allowance is measured in total kilos or in a number of bags — and the two give very different results on the same fare.
| System | Where it applies | Standard Economy |
|---|---|---|
| Piece concept | Any route touching the Americas (USA, Canada, Latin America, Caribbean) — either direction — plus most of Africa. | 2 x 23 kg (two bags). Business 2 x 32 kg. |
| Weight concept | Everything else: intra-Europe, Europe↔Middle East, Europe↔Asia, Turkey domestic. | Short/medium-haul up to 20 kg; long-haul (Asia / Mid-East) up to 30 kg. Business 40 kg. |
No single bag may exceed 32 kg under either system — heavier than that and you must split the load across pieces.
Cabin bag & personal item
| Item | Allowance |
|---|---|
| Personal / under-seat item | 40 x 30 x 15 cm, up to 4 kg. One personal item (handbag, small backpack or laptop bag) in addition to the cabin bag in Economy and Business. It must fit under the seat in front of you. |
| Cabin / carry-on bag | 55 x 40 x 23 cm · 8 kg (Economy: 1 piece; Business: 2 pieces, 16 kg total) Free — included in all fares |
What each fare includes
| Fare | Personal | Cabin | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| EcoFly | 40 x 30 x 15 cm, 4 kg | 1 x 8 kg + personal item | Short-haul international: none (hand-luggage only). Piece routes (Americas/Africa): 2 x 23 kg. Weight long-haul (Asia/Mid-East): ~30 kg. Domestic: 15 kg. |
| ExtraFly | 40 x 30 x 15 cm, 4 kg | 1 x 8 kg + personal item | Weight routes: 20 kg short-haul / up to 30 kg long-haul. Piece routes: 2 x 23 kg. Domestic: 20 kg. |
| PrimeFly | 40 x 30 x 15 cm, 4 kg | 1 x 8 kg + personal item | Weight routes: highest Economy allowance (up to 30 kg+). Piece routes: 2 x 23 kg. Domestic: 25 kg. |
| Business | 40 x 30 x 15 cm, 4 kg | 2 x 8 kg (16 kg total) + personal item | Weight routes: 40 kg. Piece routes: 2 x 32 kg. |
What you actually get on a cheap fare
Here’s the gap between the policy page and what actually lands on the cheapest bookable fare — the number that matters on a deal.
Short-haul (Istanbul or Europe to nearby Europe, the Caucasus, North Africa): the cheapest EcoFly really is hand baggage only — 8 kg cabin, nothing in the hold. Budget for a paid bag or pack carry-on.
Long-haul to or from the Americas or Africa (piece concept): the cheapest fares we price at deal level include 2 x 23 kg checked — two bags, not one, and not a 20 kg weight allowance. A Washington-to-Istanbul or New York-to-Europe Turkish ticket carries two checked bags even at the entry Economy fare, because piece-concept routes don’t sell a bare hand-luggage long-haul product the way short-haul does.
Long-haul to Asia or the Middle East (weight concept): the cheapest deal fares typically include 1 x 30 kg checked — the long-haul weight allowance, not the 20 kg short-haul figure.
The takeaway: on a cheap Turkish short-haul, assume hand-luggage-only; on a cheap Turkish long-haul you almost always already have checked baggage — 2 x 23 kg across the Atlantic and to Africa, ~30 kg to Asia
Elite status, infants & codeshares
Miles&Smiles Elite & Star Alliance Gold. Elite and Star Alliance Gold members get extra free baggage on top of the fare allowance — generally +20 kg on weight-concept routes or +1 x 23 kg piece on piece-concept routes, with Elite Plus getting more. It stacks, so an Elite flyer on a transatlantic Economy ticket can check three bags.
Infants. An infant without a seat (under 2) is allowed one checked bag — typically 10 kg on weight routes or 1 x 23 kg on piece routes — plus a fully-collapsible stroller or car seat carried free.
Codeshares & connections. If your Turkish ticket includes a segment operated by, or connecting to, another airline, the allowance printed on your specific booking governs the whole journey — but interline itineraries can switch between the piece and weight systems, and the most-restrictive segment can apply. On a single through-ticket the allowance is usually consistent; read the baggage line on your own confirmation rather than assuming the Turkish figure.
Oversize, sports & special items
Oversize / overweight. Bags between 23 and 32 kg, or exceeding the standard size, are accepted for an extra-weight or oversize fee but are still capped at 32 kg per piece for handler safety. Beyond that you must split the load.
Sports equipment. Carried as checked baggage only and charged per the Sports Equipment Fee Schedule (separate from normal excess baggage — you can’t buy it as ordinary extra allowance). The first set of golf or ski equipment is generally carried free; bikes, surfboards, diving gear and similar are charged by weight/size.
Musical instruments. Small instruments count within your normal cabin or checked allowance. Larger ones (e.g. cellos) can travel on a purchased extra seat — booked at a sales office at least 48 hours before departure, with an instrument size up to 140 x 42 x 25 cm and weight up to 75 kg in the seat. Turkish disclaims liability for instrument damage.
2026 EU hand-luggage rule. The EU’s proposed standard guaranteeing a free under-seat personal item plus a cabin bag is still being negotiated, not law, and the European Commission has signalled it won’t force size harmonisation. As a non-EU carrier, Turkish Airlines isn’t bound by it on non-EU routes; its 8 kg / 55 x 40 x 23 cm cabin rule and 4 kg personal item already meet the substance of the proposal.

Frequently asked questions
What is Turkish Airlines' cabin baggage allowance in 2026?
One cabin bag up to 8 kg and 55 x 40 x 23 cm, plus a personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm and 4 kg, in Economy. Business passengers get two cabin pieces (16 kg total) plus a personal item.
Does the cheapest Turkish Airlines fare include a checked bag?
It depends on the route. On short-haul international routes (Europe, the Caucasus, North Africa) the cheapest EcoFly is hand-luggage only — 8 kg cabin and nothing in the hold. Long-haul is different: on piece-concept routes to and from the Americas and Africa, even the cheapest Economy fare includes 2 x 23 kg checked, and on weight-concept long-haul to Asia or the Middle East the cheapest fares typically include about 30 kg. Domestic EcoFly includes 15 kg.
How much checked baggage do I get in Economy?
It depends on whether your route uses the piece or weight system. Piece-concept routes — anything touching the Americas, plus most of Africa — give 2 x 23 kg in standard Economy. Weight-concept routes give up to 20 kg short and medium-haul, and up to 30 kg long-haul (Asia, Middle East). No single bag may exceed 32 kg.
Which Turkish Airlines routes use the piece (2-bag) system?
Any itinerary touching the Americas — the USA, Canada, Latin America or the Caribbean — in either direction, plus most African destinations, uses the piece concept: 2 x 23 kg in Economy. The direction does not matter, so New York to Istanbul and Istanbul to New York are both 2 x 23 kg. Everything else (Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Turkey domestic) uses the weight concept, measured in total kilos.
What's the difference between EcoFly, ExtraFly and PrimeFly?
They are Economy fare bundles. EcoFly is cheapest with the least baggage and strictest change rules; ExtraFly adds a checked bag and more flexibility; PrimeFly is the most generous on baggage and the most flexible to change or refund. On piece-concept routes (the Americas, much of Africa) Economy carries 2 x 23 kg across the bundles — the bundle mainly changes flexibility, not the bag count.
Do Miles&Smiles elite members get extra baggage?
Yes. Miles&Smiles Elite and Star Alliance Gold members get extra free allowance on top of the fare — generally +20 kg on weight-concept routes or +1 x 23 kg on piece-concept routes, with Elite Plus getting more. It stacks on the standard allowance, so an Elite member in transatlantic Economy can check three bags.
How much does an extra or excess bag cost on Turkish Airlines?
There’s no single price — fees are set by route and region. Weight-concept excess runs roughly €8-32 per kg (often sold in 5 kg blocks), and piece-concept extra bags can run from around $165 up to $290 depending on the region of departure. Turkish quotes the exact amount in your local currency, so use the official baggage calculator for your specific flight.
What is the maximum weight for a single checked bag?
32 kg per piece, on every fare and under both the weight and piece systems. A bag over 32 kg won’t be accepted as a single item — you must redistribute the contents across more pieces.
Can I bring sports equipment or a musical instrument?
Yes. Sports equipment travels as checked baggage and is charged per Turkish’s Sports Equipment Fee Schedule; the first set of golf or ski gear is generally free. Small instruments fit within your normal allowance, while large ones (like a cello) can travel on a purchased extra seat booked at least 48 hours ahead.
Do the new EU free hand-luggage rules apply to Turkish Airlines?
The EU standard guaranteeing a free personal item plus cabin bag is still a proposal under negotiation, not law, and the Commission has said it won’t force a single size. As a non-EU carrier, Turkish isn’t bound by it on non-EU routes — but its existing 8 kg cabin bag plus 4 kg personal item already match the spirit of it.
