Bonaire isn't a beach island — its beaches are rocky and modest, and that's beside the point. The draw is underwater: the fringing reef starts maybe 10 metres off the shore, so the island runs on "drive-and-dive." Yellow-painted stones along the coast road mark some 50-odd shore sites; you park your rental truck, gear up, and walk in. A $40 STINAPA nature tag is mandatory before you enter the water, funding one of the world's oldest marine parks (1979). Above water, thousands of flamingos crowd the Pekelmeer salt pans beside Cargill's pink salt pyramids. Eat kabritu stoba, the slow goat stew. Bonaire sits outside the hurricane belt, so it's divable year-round with ~28°C water; November–April is calmest, while May–June brings the fewest visitors and the cheapest fares.
