Our latest fare check overturns the usual advice about it in two ways: the cheapest fare on the route was a non-stop, not a connection, and TUI fly — not KLM — held nine of every ten cheap fares. Cancun runs on a clear seasonal pattern: the dry season (December–April) draws the most visitors and the highest fares, with a Christmas and Easter/spring-break peak; the wetter, hurricane-season months (September–October) are the cheapest and quietest. The table below tracks that demand. One thing it gets backwards, and the measured figures underneath correct: on this route the non-stops set the floor, not the connections.

Two sets of numbers here, and both are worth having. Our longer-run tracking of this route is solid — 91 recorded observations — and puts a genuinely good return around €330–€470 with an everyday level near €600. A live fare check on 5 August 2026 (the 100 cheapest economy returns, hand baggage only) found the current market higher and tighter: €592–€1,072, median €650, with four in five between €610 and €670. So €330 is a real floor this route has reached, but on today’s dates about €620 is the realistic target. And contrary to the usual advice, the cheapest fare in that check was a non-stop at €592 — the connections did not undercut it.

Non-stop (about 11¼ hours):
- TUI fly — the price leader by a distance, holding 90 of the 100 cheapest fares at €592–€1,045. A leisure carrier popular with package holidaymakers, so check what the fare includes. Check the routing too: 37 of those 90 fares were not direct at all — they stop at Montego Bay in Jamaica on the way to Cancun, turning an 11-hour flight into a 14-hour day.
- KLM — non-stop Schiphol → Cancun on the Boeing 787; full-service, with a checked bag included on standard fares. It is the more comfortable ticket and you pay for it: its fares in our check started at €963, around 60% above TUI.
Connecting (about 14 hours, and no cheaper in our check):
- SWISS via Zurich — the only European connection that appeared in our check, at €982, and worth reading the small print on: the Amsterdam–Zurich hop was flown by airBaltic and the long leg to Cancun by Edelweiss, so you may never board a SWISS aircraft on the way out.
- Air France via Paris CDG, Iberia via Madrid and Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Munich — comfortable European routings that avoid a US connection, though none of them produced a fare among the 100 cheapest we checked.
- US carriers (American, United, Delta) via US hubs — sometimes cheap, but a US connection requires an ESTA even if you never leave the airport, so factor that in.
The received wisdom is that a European connection saves money here. On the dates we checked it did not: connecting and non-stop itineraries had the same median of €650, and the cheapest fare of all was a non-stop at €592. So book the non-stop for time and price, and treat a connection as a fallback rather than the budget option — though a European routing does still keep you out of the US visa-waiver system, which a US connection does not.
When to book & how to save
- Book 2–4 months ahead for the best balance of price and choice; long-haul fares to Cancun rarely get cheaper in the final weeks, especially over the dry season and Christmas.
- Travel in September for the lowest fares — it held 76 of the 100 cheapest returns in our check. October is usually named alongside it, but not one October departure reached that list, so we would price it rather than assume. Both fall in hurricane season, so rain is more likely and crowds are thinner.
- Prefer a European connection (Air France, Iberia, Lufthansa) over a US routing to skip the ESTA/visa requirement that a US connection triggers.
- Compare all-in prices including bags: KLM includes a checked bag on standard fares, but the cheapest “light” and leisure fares may not.
- Avoid the Christmas/New Year and Easter peaks if you can — they’re the most expensive and busiest weeks of the year on this route.
Arriving in Cancun
Flights land at Cancun International Airport (CUN), about 20 km south of the Hotel Zone and the main gateway for the Riviera Maya (Playa del Carmen, Tulum). There’s no train, so the usual options are the ADO bus to downtown Cancun or Playa del Carmen (a comfortable, cheap coach, roughly €5–€15), a pre-booked private transfer, or an authorised airport taxi (about €35–€55 to the Hotel Zone — agree the fare first and use the official ranks). Mexico uses the peso, so carry some local cash for taxis and tips.
