Bangkok to Jakarta is one of Southeast Asia’s busiest short-haul links, flown nonstop in about three and a half hours by a mix of full-service and low-cost carriers. Flights leave from both of Bangkok’s airports — Thai Airways and Garuda from Suvarnabhumi, and the budget carriers from Don Mueang — so the smart move is to check both. This is a year-round leisure and business route, so fares track school holidays and long weekends more than weather. The priciest windows are the December–early January holidays, Songkran (mid-April) and the Indonesian Eid/Lebaran travel peak, which shifts each year. • Garuda Indonesia — the Indonesian flag carrier, flying its own aircraft with a full-service cabin, handy if you are connecting onward within Indonesia.

Non-stop from Don Mueang (DMK), usually cheapest:

• Thai Lion Air — low-cost nonstops on Boeing 737 and Airbus jets; the headline fares are the lowest, but check bag and seat add-ons.
• Batik Air — a fuller low-cost product, often including a checked bag on this route — compare the all-in price against Thai Lion.
• Citilink — Garuda’s low-cost arm, another competitive budget option from Don Mueang.

Because the budget carriers compete hard from Don Mueang, they usually undercut the full-service nonstops. If you want a bag and a hot meal, fly Thai Airways or Garuda from Suvarnabhumi; if price rules, price the Don Mueang carriers first.

• Book 4–8 weeks ahead for the best low-cost fares; unlike long-haul routes, short regional hops like this rarely reward booking many months out unless you are travelling over a peak.
• Dodge the peaks: the December–early January holidays, Songkran in mid-April and the Indonesian Lebaran/Eid period are the busiest and most expensive.
• Check which airport you’re leaving from: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are on opposite sides of the city, so factor in the transfer time when comparing a cheap Don Mueang fare.
• Watch the bags: the cheapest Thai Lion and Citilink fares are cabin-baggage only — add a checked bag before comparing, as it can flip which airline is cheapest.
• Consider a midweek trip: Tuesday-to-Thursday departures are usually a little cheaper and less crowded than weekend flights.

Arriving in Jakarta

Flights land at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK), about 20 km northwest of central Jakarta, with most international arrivals at Terminal 3. The Railink airport train runs to BNI City and Manggarai stations in around 50 minutes and costs roughly ฿150–170 (about IDR 70,000). A metered taxi or ride-hailing car into the centre takes 45 minutes to well over an hour depending on Jakarta’s notorious traffic, and costs around ฿400–700. Many nationalities can use Indonesia’s visa on arrival, so allow time for the immigration queue.
