Kalamata is where the olive actually comes from — the big almond-shaped purple-black ones with a tangy, vinegary bite, named after this city rather than slapped on a jar as a marketing word. But the real reason to base yourself here sits 30 km inland: Ancient Messene, one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Greece, with a 10,000-seat theatre and an intact stadium — and almost nobody there. You can have the whole site to yourself, which you'll never manage at Delphi or Olympia. In town, eat lalagia (fried dough strips) and shop the central market on Wednesday or Saturday over the tourist tavernas. It's also the launch point for the wild Mani peninsula to the south. Come May–June or September–October: warm sea, none of the July–August heat or crowds.
