Saint-Pierre was Martinique's grandest city until 8 May 1902, when Mount Pelée erupted and killed some 30,000 people in minutes — the famous survivor was a prisoner shielded in a stone cell. You can still walk the ruins; it's the island's most distinctive sight, the "Pompeii of the Caribbean." Order a colombo, the curry-like stew Martinique inherited from indentured Indian laborers, and accras de morue (salt-cod fritters) to start. The rum is the real thing here: rhum agricole, distilled from fresh cane juice rather than molasses, and the first spirit anywhere to earn an AOC, like Champagne. Come December to April for dry, reliable heat — also the busy, pricier months. Skip August–October, the wet hurricane stretch, even if fares dip then.
