Maputo's centerpiece is its Central Train Station — a 1916 Beaux-Arts building with a copper dome and wrought-iron verandas, regularly ranked among the world's most beautiful stations (and routinely, wrongly, credited to Eiffel; he didn't design it). The thing to eat is LM prawns — named for the city's colonial name, Lourenço Marques — grilled and drowned in peri-peri, the African bird's-eye chili sauce Mozambique built its cooking around. Go to the Mercado do Peixe (fish market): buy your seafood from the stalls, hand it to an adjacent restaurant, they cook it. Come May to September — dry, sunny, cool nights. October to April is hot, humid and wet, so a cheap summer fare buys you sticky weather; the better-weather months are worth paying a bit more for.
