About Palau Palau is a remote Pacific archipelago, and the thing people come for is Jellyfish Lake on Mecherchar Island — a marine lake where millions of golden jellyfish, stingless because they've lost the need to defend themselves, drift sunward across the water each day as you snorkel among them. The surrounding Rock Islands, mushroom-shaped limestone humps over turquoise lagoons, are UNESCO-listed and reachable only by boat from Koror. On arrival you sign the Palau Pledge, stamped into your passport, promising to tread lightly — they mean it. The local curiosity is fruit bat soup, the whole bat simmered in ginger and coconut milk; try it once for the story. Come November to April for dry, calm seas and the best diving; June to October is the wet, choppy stretch to avoid. Fares are rarely cheap this far out, so a deal is worth grabbing.
