Dallas's defining sight is Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum, set in the old book depository where Lee Harvey Oswald shot Kennedy in 1963 — there's still a white X painted on the road marking the spot. A few blocks east, Deep Ellum is the warehouse district turned music-and-mural quarter, with live blues, rock, and craft breweries most nights. Dallas takes its Tex-Mex seriously, and it earned it: the frozen margarita machine was invented here in 1971, when a restaurateur retooled a soft-serve machine to keep up with demand. Order one with enchiladas and you're drinking local history. Come March–May or September–November, when it's warm but not brutal; fall also brings the huge State Fair of Texas.
