Varadero is a 20-kilometre ribbon of white sand on the thin Hicacos Peninsula — one of the longest continuous beaches in the Caribbean, and almost entirely a wall-to-wall all-inclusive resort strip. Go in knowing that: it's a beach holiday, not a slice of Cuban life. For that, the colonial city of Matanzas is a short hop next door, and Havana is about two hours west. Skip the buffet lobster and find a paladar (a private restaurant) for fresh-grilled seafood — far better than anything on the resort. Near the airport, Cueva de Saturno is a flooded cave cenote you can swim in. Come January to April: dry, sunny, warm without the swelter.
