Greenland finally has direct flights: Nuuk's international airport opened in November 2024, and United runs a twice-weekly Newark–Nuuk route in summer (back as of June 2026), so you no longer have to connect through Copenhagen or Reykjavík. The sight that earns the trip is the Ilulissat icefjord, a UNESCO site where the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier dumps icebergs the size of buildings into the sea — you hear them crack before you see them. Eat suaasat, the traditional soup made with seal (sometimes whale or reindeer), barley and onion. Go June to early September: near-constant daylight, hikeable trails, and the only window when boats and most towns are reliably reachable. Avoid deep winter unless you're specifically there for dog-sledding and the northern lights — many routes simply shut down.
