It sits below the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — the highest coastal mountain range on earth, with snow peaks 5,775m high just 42km from the Caribbean. From here you reach Tayrona's jungle-backed beaches, the four-to-five-day trek to Ciudad Perdida (the Lost City, older than Machu Picchu), and Minca, a cooler coffee-and-waterfall village in the hills. Eat cayeye for breakfast: mashed green banana with costeño cheese and suero. Come December–April for dry skies; the Lost City trek is best December–March when river crossings are low.
