🌍 About Manaus
Manaus sits 1,500 km up the Amazon and is reached mostly by plane or boat — there's no road south. The Teatro Amazonas, a domed opera house built with imported Italian marble and glass during the 1890s rubber boom, still runs a real opera season (roughly April–June). The signature sight is the Meeting of the Waters just downstream, where the near-black Rio Negro and the sandy Solimões flow side by side for about 6 km without blending — a boat trip, not a viewpoint. Eat the x-caboquinho: a buttered bread roll stuffed with shavings of tucumã palm fruit, squeaky queijo coalho and fried plantain, sold at morning bakeries; grilled tambaqui is the fish to order. Come June–November, the dry season, when river beaches appear and jungle trips are easier; December–May means high water and rain.
