Lilongwe is split by its namesake river into two halves that barely feel like the same city: the planned 1960s City Centre, all wide avenues, embassies and banks, and the Old Town, built around the Area 2 walled market where Malawians actually shop for produce, spices and woodcarvings. The unexpected thing in town is the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre — 70 hectares of forest with hiking trails and a rescue sanctuary, right inside the capital. Eat nsima, the stiff maize staple, with chambo, the tilapia from Lake Malawi, grilled and served with relish. Most people use Lilongwe as a launch point; the lake and the parks are the real reward, a few hours out. Come May–October, the dry season; June–July nights drop to 10–12°C, so pack a jacket. Skip the November–April rains.
