Harstad-Narvik (Evenes airport) is the practical gateway to two of Norway's most photographed regions — the Lofoten Islands, a 200km drive south through some of Europe's most dramatic coastline, and Vesterålen, closer to the airport and the best place in Norway for whale-watching from Andenes. Lofoten itself is the icon: razor-edged granite peaks rising straight out of turquoise fjords, rust-red rorbu fishing cabins on stilts in Reine and Hamnøy, and the surreal football pitch in Henningsvær that sits on its own tiny island. Reinebringen — the 1,978-step stone staircase to a viewpoint over Reine — is the hike most travellers come for. The midnight sun begins above the Arctic Circle around 24 May and runs until late July; from late August onwards the Northern Lights season opens again.
