London's best-known fact for travellers is also its most useful: the major national museums — the British Museum (Rosetta Stone, Parthenon marbles), the National Gallery, Tate Modern, the V&A — are all free to walk into, no ticket. That alone makes a cheap fare go further. The real local dish isn't fish and chips but pie and mash with "liquor," a green parsley sauce left over from the East End's old eel shops; a few originals still serve it. Skip Leicester Square and aim for one neighbourhood — Borough Market for food, or canal-side Hackney for the actual London people live in.
