Medina is Islam's second holiest city, built around the Prophet's Mosque — the vast complex with the green dome over Muhammad's tomb, its courtyard shaded by giant retractable umbrellas. Be clear before you book: the sacred central zone is Muslims-only, enforced by checkpoints and "Muslims only" road signs. Since 2021 non-Muslims can enter the wider city but not the mosque or the Haram around it (unlike Mecca, which is entirely off-limits). If you can go, see Quba Mosque, the first mosque in Islam, founded in 622. Come November to March, when days sit around 25–27°C; June to September holds above 40°C.
