Bissau is mostly a launch pad for the Bijagós archipelago offshore, but the city itself rewards a day. Head to Bissau Velho, the old Portuguese quarter — pastel buildings genuinely crumbling from the humidity, not restored for tourists — and the Fortaleza de São José da Amura, which holds the mausoleum of Amílcar Cabral, the leader who fought Portuguese rule.
