Caracas sits in a long valley with El Ávila — the locals call it Warairarepano — a green mountain wall rising straight off the city's north edge, separating it from the Caribbean. Take the teleférico cable car to the ~2,100m summit: 15 minutes up, the city sprawling below and open sea on the far side. For food, skip the plain cheese arepa and order an arepa de pabellón — a corn arepa stuffed with shredded beef, black beans, fried sweet plantain and white cheese, the handheld version of the national dish, pabellón criollo.
