🌍 About Northern Cyprus

North Cyprus uses the Turkish lira, not the euro of the south, which makes it noticeably cheaper than most of the Mediterranean — a deal fare goes a long way once you're there. The thing to see is Kyrenia Castle, which holds the Kyrenia ship: a 4th-century-BC Greek merchant vessel, the oldest recovered wreck of its kind, raised from the seabed in pieces and reassembled in Aleppo pine. Outside Famagusta is Varosha, a beach resort fenced off and frozen since 1974, now partly reopened — you can walk two streets of empty 1970s hotels. Eat şeftali kebab, minced meat wrapped in caul fat and grilled. Come April–June or September–October: warm sea, manageable heat. July and August are punishingly hot; the sea stays swimmable into late October.
