Astana is a capital built from scratch on the bare steppe since the late 1990s, which is why the skyline looks like an architect's showroom: Norman Foster's Khan Shatyr, a translucent tent-shaped mall with an indoor beach (sand shipped in from the Maldives), and Bayterek, a golden-orb tower holding a gilded cast of the first president's handprint.
