Nouakchott barely existed in 1958 — it was built from near-nothing to be the capital of a newly independent country, so don't come for old quarters or monuments; there aren't any. Come for the Port de Pêche, the beach fish market where wooden pirogues, each hand-painted in different colors, get hauled straight out of the Atlantic surf and gutted on the sand in the afternoon when the boats return.
