🌍 About Bishkek

Bishkek is a flat, leafy Soviet-planned grid — Ala-Too Square, brutalist ministries, mosaics bolted to the apartment blocks — and honestly the city is the prelude, not the point. The real draw sits 40km south: Ala-Archa gorge, where you can stand among Tien Shan glaciers and 4,000m peaks within an hour of the centre. Take marshrutka 265 from Osh Bazaar, itself worth an hour for the dried-fruit, spice and felt-shyrdak stalls. Eat beshbarmak, the Kyrgyz national dish — boiled mutton or horse over wide flat noodles, eaten by hand ("five fingers"). Come May to September; midsummer pushes the mid-30s°C in town but the mountains stay cool, while October to April is grey, cold and skippable. The warm months are also the cheap-fare months, so a summer deal lines up nicely.
